Walt Disney Pictures have announced their plans to bring us a movie focusing on a new female action hero! According to Deadline and various other sources, the studio is planning on bringing the tale of Delilah Dirk to the big screen. The film is to be based on writer and artist Tony Cliff‘s acclaimed serialized web comic about the “International Mistress of Swordsmanship.”
It is likely that the film will focus on adapting the comic’s first story, Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lietutenant. Collected in 2013 by First Second Books, Turkish Lieutenant is officially described as follows:
Lovable ne’er-do-well Delilah Dirk is an adventurer for the 19th century. She has traveled to Japan, Indonesia, France, and even the New World. Using the skills she’s picked up on the way, Delilah’s adventures continue as she plots to rob a rich and corrupt Sultan in Constantinople. With the aid of her flying boat and her newfound friend, Selim, she evades the Sultan’s guards, leaves angry pirates in the dust, and fights her way through the countryside. For Delilah, one adventure leads to the next in this thrilling and funny installment in her exciting life.
You can learn and read more about Delilah and her adventures at DelilahDirk.com. You can also read first 80 pages of Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lietutenant for free at the website. The second book in the series, Delilah Dirk and the King’s Shilling, was collected and published earlier this year.
The film adaptation is set to be produced by Justin Giritlian alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Mark Mower. Miri Yoon, meanwhile, will oversee for Vertigo Entertainment with Tendo Nagenda and Chaz Salembier doing likewise for Walt Disney Pictures.
There is no word on when production will begin or an anticipated release date. The studio has also not mentioned any ideas by way of casting.
