Heroes, the ever going battle of good vs evil and the like have always been a massively common trope across every medium of story-telling. And as I have noted there is very good reason for that, regardless of every factor there is in life and how different we all might be all of us want to believe that good will be the one victorious at the end and to have someone to cheer for when things go south.
It feels like now more than ever we are seeing more and more stories driven around what could otherwise be ordinary people with clearly amazing powers and abilities that aim to make their world a better place- or try and control it depending on what side of the coin you are favoring. Comics, manga, anime, television series, novels, movies- the superhero craze is growing rapidly and becoming stronger with every new story woven.
With all the movies Disney has been releasing with relation to Star Wars and Marvel properties the trope is on fire. And spreading to their networks. Whereas Disney Channel comes across as more light-hearted and very slice-of-life filled with their tales, Disney XD has always been, for lack of a better term, edgier. With more action-based series in both animated format and live-action filled with adventure; from their animated incarnation of Star Wars, Wonder over Yonder, The 7Ds, Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything and the list continues on.
Action and adventure seems to be what Disney XD is going for, and from the looks of things the newly ordered live-action series, “MECH-X4” fits perfectly.
The following information is from the press releases:
The series stars newcomer Nathaniel James Potvin as Ryan Walker, a freshman at Bay City High who has technopathy – the extraordinary ability to control technology with his mind. His talent mysteriously awakens MECH-X4, a giant 120-foot robot built by an elusive genius-in-hiding to defend their town against impending doom. Ryan recruits his two best friends and his older brother to help him operate MECH-X4. When monsters suddenly begin to descend upon their city, the four must quickly learn to work as a team in order to pilot the robot that is their only hope of saving their town, and ultimately the world, from mass destruction. Also starring are Kamran Lucas as Ryan’s genius friend Harris and Pearce Joza as his quirky friend Spyder. Raymond Cham stars as Ryan’s older brother Mark. The series was created by executive producer Steve Marmel. Anupam Nigam also serves as executive producer alongside co-executive producer and director Zach Lipovsky.
Just from a glance it seems fairly anime-esque simply in the sense of having such over-the-top monsters and appearances of operating a robot is striking of Power Rangers. Disney has always been able to be very inventive with their narration and be very distant with what they are running with so there is no questioning that things will be interesting. Even though a fair share of the story will seemingly count on the monster-of-the-week theme I do hope that there is something more related to it all.
Even though Disney has done quite a few other original series playing with the concept of super-heroes, it seems very clear that with MECH-X4 they are really coring in on the science-fiction aspect of the tale. Seeing as it can be very common to gloss over the science of heroes in fiction with a younger audience in mind it is nice to see that it is going to count.
With production already happening in Vancouver and the series slated for arrival on Disney XD this fall fans will not have to wait long to get a taste of Disney’s newest science-fiction adventure. There is a lot that can be done, a lot to play with and I hope we see a lot of that potential reached.
