After being aired on Nickelodeon back on March 3rd of 2013, Monster High’s sixth animated special arrives on DVD, Blu-Ray, Digital and Netflix on July 7th.
Monster High, now celebrating five years, centers around the sons and daughters of famous, and perhaps infamous, children of various monsters across history and their lives as they attended Monster High and lead their un-lives. Over the past five years Monster High has grown indefinite. Originally starting out with six main ‘ghouls’, the brand now has well over a hundred characters and more being added regularly. Their doll have become a favorite with both young children and adult collectors across the globe. With five volumes of webisodes on their YouTube account, several book series, an extensive range of goods from home wears to clothing and preparing for their twelfth animated special, Boo York, Book York!, slated for a October release. Well, you can say that Monster High is on fire.
Under the slogan, “be yourself, be unique, be a monster”, Monster High encourages their fans to stay true to themselves and embrace whatever it might be that makes you unique and own it. A great message for anyone regardless of age. Between the great messages, array of, as they would say, “freaky fab”, characters and unique dolls it is clear just why Monster High is so beloved.
As mentioned, Monster High has released countless animated specials over the years. Some had been aired though popular kid’s network, Nickelodeon, and then later received some type of home-video distribution. And others have taken the OVA option allowing fans to gain access to them sooner and swifter and later had a primer on the channel. Previously all of the specials where released on DVD in North America’s region, that is except for Scaris. The last special to be first aired on Nickelodeon had fallen to the side-lines for two years leaving fans questioning if there might ever be a release. That is until now, at long last the final (for now) special is airing to retailers and fans can fill in the gaping hole in their collection.
Scaris: City of Frights takes the center of Frankie and Draculaura, whom often sever as the main protagonists of specials and webisodes, and onto Clawdeen Wolf. In the special, Clawdeen Wolf has been continually working towards her dream of becoming a fashion designer, and after a video of her fashin-mob goes viral, she receives a chance to become an apprentice for her idol- Madame Ghostier in Scaris. After some convincing from Headmistress Bloodgood, Clawdeen , along with her ghoul friends head over-sea to the city of frights. As Clawdeen works her way to prove her worth, she finds herself competing against two other ghouls, Skelita Calaveras and Jinafire Long.
As Clawdeen strives towards making her dream a reality, her friends are haunting the streets of Scaris taking in the frights, Rochelle and Frankie set out to find Rochelle’s lost love, Garrott, whom has long since stopped writing her lover letters. By chance the two come across a hidden secret beneath the city streets. And together the ghouls and masters band together to relive the truth and prove how critical it to stay true to yourself.
Par with previous Monster High releases, both the DVD and Blu-Ray offer little in terms of bonus content. Typically a few webisiodes or something along the lines. The Scaris release includes the full specials from their spin-off series, Ever After High’s specials Legacy Day and True Hearts Day. However there is no actual Monster High bonus content, an odd feat.
