BSCkids: Diego Velazquez
When did you first decide you wanted to act? How supportive was your family about the decision?
When I was very little, I didn’t ever want toys, all I wanted was costumes. I would sit on the couch with the Halloween catalog that came in the mail and circle all the costumes I wanted. I would do this for hours! One day when I was about 6, I went to work with my mom, who was a stylist for commercials, when I saw what the actors were doing, I looked at her and said “mom, I want to do what they are doing.” Later that year is when I booked my first movie Extraordinary Measures with Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford. I guess it was meant to be!! My family is very supportive. Everyone has really changed their lives around, so I can be in Los Angeles and continue. I’m lucky.
Tell us a little bit about your series, “Thundermans” What makes it great and why should kids and families watch it?
The Thundermans are a family of super heroes, who have moved to hiddenville to live normal lives and trying their hardest to keep their identities a secret….which is not always easy. I think it’s a great show because it’s really funny! Not only is it funny for kids, but for adults who are watching with their kids too. Also, there is always a great message about family, and sticking together, even when times get a little sticky.
Can you tell us a little bit about your character, Billy, in the series?
Billy lives in his own little world. He is pretty much clueless!! It makes him really funny though, because he can never quite grasp reality.
Do you share any similarities with you character?
Billy is a nice guy. He cares a lot about people, and animals, and tries hard to always do the right thing…that is how we are similar.
Were there any funny behind the scene stories you can share with us while filming?
We are all friends behind the scenes too, so we are always joking around and having fun.
Have your friends/family gotten to watch any episodes yet? What have they thought?
We just finished filming our 50th episode last week, so they have been able to see quite a few at this point, and so far, everyone still loves it!
What would you say is your favorite Nickelodeon show of all time (past or present) and why (excluding your upcoming show of course)?
Spongebob Squarepants. I could watch it over and over and over.
Who is currently playing on your iPod?
Nirvana, Ed Sheeran, George Ezra, Skrillex, Eminem
Who has been your favorite actor/actress you have met and what have you learned from them?
I worked with Brendan Fraser and he was really fun and nice and easy to be around. I learned from him to always stay humble and nice, because it makes everyone around you happy.
Can you tell us some of your hobbies?
Extreme Martial arts, nunchucks, skateboarding, dogs, and playing my ps4.
How do you find time to spend on your hobbies and friends while going to school and acting?
It’s not always easy, but I do as much as I can on the weekends.
Any advice for other children getting into acting?
Just be yourself. It’s hard work, so you have to want it 100%. No one can want it for you.
If acting hadn’t worked out, what do you think your other career choice would be and why?
I really like Special FX make up, I think it’s fun to transform people into monsters and zombies and vampires. So, someday I think I will study that too.
