This year, on October 7, the classic and iconic Disney movie, Sleeping Beauty, released on Blu-ray and for the first time on Digital HD. And it looks marvelous. The Diamond Edition marks an important addition to everyone’s movie collection.
“Sleeping Beauty” tells the wondrous tale of a princess cursed by an evil fairy, protected by three loving fairies and, ultimately, saved by “true love’s kiss.” Featuring the voice talents of renowned opera singer Mary Costa as Sleeping Beauty and Disney stalwart Eleanor Audley as the evil fairy, Maleficent, the film’s vibrant visuals were created by a team that included Milt Kahl and Ollie Johnston, two of Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men and an Academy Award®-nominated score, 1959, adapted from the incandescent music of Peter Tchaikovsky. “Sleeping Beauty” is the sixteenth animated feature in the Disney animated features canon and was the last animated feature produced by Walt Disney to be based upon a fairy tale. It is the tenth film released as part of Disney’s prestigious Blu-ray Diamond Collection.
Sleeping Beauty has always been one of my favorite Disney tales (right after The Little Mermaid of course), so I was very excited to add the Diamond Edition to my collection. What makes this release special is how incredible the remastered animated film looks. It has been released in high-definition with enhanced sound. Overall, it just feels better.
Also the Diamond Edition makes a great gift because it includes not only the Blu-Ray but also the DVD version and the Digital Copy of the movie. I loved this because while I have both a Blu-ray player, when I wanted to bring the movie over to my nieces house, I was able to take the DVD version over and appease them as well.
Now we can get to the best part: THE BONUS FEATURES! The Diamond Edition includes so many fun features! I spent a good amount of time watching just these. They include “Once Upon A Parade,” in which “Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland tells us the tale of Walt Disney World’s new Festival Of Fantasy Parade, “Art of Evil: Generations Of Disney Villains,” a legacy piece spotlighting Disney’s favorite villain animator and Maleficent creator Marc Davis, and “@DisneyAnimation: Artists in Motion,” in which Walt Disney Animation Visual Development artist Brittney Lee goes through the process of creating a three-dimensional sculpture of Maleficent, completely out of paper. Not to mention deleted scenes which have never been seen before! It is hard to believe that such an iconic film has deleted scenes that haven’t been released before but with this edition you get to see them!
It’s hard not to feel nostalgic as an adult watching Sleeping Beauty. I watched it so many times as a child and adding it to my film collection now just feels right. I think adults and children alike can love this movie still even decades after its release. Sleeping Beauty: The Diamond Edition will be a fantastic gift this holiday season for children, friends, family, and Disney fans alike!
