Todd Clark brings us a new series, titled “The Ice Cream Kid,” with the first book titled Brain Freeze! Lots of things to like with this book, but I will say that the illustrations along with the character of Bert are the highlights in my opinion. The sarcastic side-kick is super funny and keeps the reader amused throughout the adventure.
We first get introduced to Irwin Snackcracker and his family as well as friends Elisha and Trey who all make for a nice cast of characters. Author Clark does a great job at making us feel like we are right there with Irwin and his Grandpa as they defend the city. Clark may have went a bit overboard when it comes to the character names (some go over the kid readers head) and really who would be scared of being hit by a meatball, but it is all forgiven because the fun factor of the story with the chocolate goodness of a fudgesicle. While Sweaty Crocker and Wendy C. may not have been all that scary, Choptimus Grime did the trick as “it” tries to destroy the city.
Our 10-year-old had the following to say,
“Good book, I might get sick of ice-cream though after a while, I don’t know. It was cool that his Grandfather was a super hero also. I would have a cooler sidekick though, Bert is funny though.”
Great start to what should be a wonderful series, hopefully we see Irwin and his ICK shirt real soon. The question is will Grandpa and Captain Corgi be there to help them next time or will Irwin have to rely on his skills (and maybe Bert) to save the day? Will he let his friends in on his secret?
Be sure to check out all the neat stuff at the end of the book in the “More to Explore!” section and you might learn a bit about the Snackcracker family.
When Irwin Snackcracker leaves for school in the morning all he can think about is pizza, tater-tots, and winning first place in the booger contest. He leaps down the bannister, quickly eats breakfast before brushing his teeth and dashing out the door. Little does Irwin know, this day will change his life. He is just one brain freeze away from superpowers! When Irwin unexpectedly scores the last Fudgesicle left in the ice cream cart at school, he finds out that he is no longer an ordinary fourth grader. Taking a big bite of the delicious frozen treat transforms Irwin into “The Ice Cream Kid” who, with a steady supply of ice cream, has the ability to run at lightning speed and talk to animals along the way!
