Last weekend I had the chance to go to a Second Screen Live event to watch one of my all time favorite films, The Nightmare Before Christmas on the big screen. If you haven’t heard of the Second Screen Live showings, the events advocate breaking the rules by bringing your iPad in to the theater! For the special theater showings, you just download the Walt Disney Studios mobile application which will enhance the theatrical movie going experience. Unlike the traditional theatrical experience, Second Screen Live is a special screening event for iPad users only where moviegoers are encouraged to “break the rules” and experience a classic film in an exciting new way through gameplay on their tablet device.
Using your iPad, viewers get to interact with their movie through games, trivia, and sing-a-longs. At the Second Screen Live showing of The Nightmare Before Christmas, we got to compete with other members in the audience through several games and actions. I went with my significant other without any children and none of the other members in the audience had children, yet this group of adults sang and laughed all the way through the movie. Also, I liked that as the movie continued, the games got harder and more fun.
I have to say that the best thing about the Second Screen Live is that adults can watch their favorite classic films in a brand new way, while children can experience it often for the first time. The only downside to the event is that some of the games take away from watching the movie and make you focus more on your device. Since this particular film is one of my favorites, I was tempted to just watch some parts instead of participating. However, by the end of the film I was still excitedly taking part in each game as I tried to get the highest score (which I did!)
The Nightmare Before Christmas follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King who is bored with the same old scare-and-scream routine. After finding Christmas Land, he yearns to spread Christmas joy throughout the world. But his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere! This amazing cult classic produced by Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride), features the cast of Chris Sarandon (The Princess Bride) as Jack Skellington speaking voice, Danny Elfman (Simpsons) as Jack Skellington singing voice & Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone) as Sally.
I attend movies a lot and this time of interactive experience was a great change of pace. I highly recommend taking advantage of the next Second Screen Live event that comes to a city near you. Just make sure you have a capable device. And do not fret, even if you are an adult going alone, you will most definitely have a blast! Trust me.
