For over two decades the phenomenon that is The Power Rangers has been entertaining and enticing fans all over the world. The brand recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in New York with a series of surprise visits to iconic locations in Manhattan. The visit to New York City around Toy Fair culminated with a basketball game with and against another NY hero – the Knicks’ JR Smith.
The Power Rangers also spent the day by stopping by the Javits Center for the 2013 American International Toy Fair travelled to Lincoln Center to hobnob with fashionistas attending Fashion Week, and queued up for Broadway tickets at the famed TKTS booth in Times Square.
They also made surprise stops to grab coffee at Starbucks and eat lunch at Lombardi’s Pizza. The Power Rangers made like real New Yorkers by riding the subway to Wall Street, and played tourists by taking in the sights at the Empire State Building. Their day was capped by a one-of-a-kind New York experience as New York Knicks Shooting Guard JR Smith welcomed the 20 Red Rangers to Chelsea Piers for a game of basketball.
The Power Ranger franchise was first launched in 1993 when it was known as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers — and quickly became the most-watched TV program in the US and is the No 1 live-action kids action series on television. Since then, the series has been seen in more than 150 markets around the world as well as been translated into numerous languages. It continues to be a mainstay in children’s programming around the world. But the franchise is more than just a television show. Through the Power Rangers emPOWER program, the Power Rangers teach kids and families how to put the Power Rangers values of teamwork, confidence, health and physical activity into action. The program provides free in-school healthy eating and exercise curriculum resources to more than 100,000 teachers annually.
Saban’s Power Rangers franchise is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers hit series.
