BSCkids recently got the chance to talk with Amanda Leighton, a young actress who is most know for her roll as Wendy Capshaw on ABC’s hit series “Make It or Break it.” She spoke with us about he role on the series as well as her life outside of acting.
As Wendy on “Make It or Break It,” she is a member of a group of teen gymnasts training for the Olympics at top-level Rocky Mountain Gymnastic Training Center, or better known as “The Rock.” Audiences meet this seemingly naive and always cheerful tiny gymnast in Season 3, and soon learn her overly perky attitude is all an act and part of her evil master plan to “take the Rock girls down.” This talented young actress has also appeared on several other series such as as Lucas’ love interest, ‘Danielle,’ on ABC Family’s teen drama series “Pretty Little Liars,” the beautiful super-genius, ‘Alex Scarborough,’ on the CW’s “90210,” misguided teen ‘Trish Leake’ on “Criminal Minds,” Treacher Collins Syndrome patient ‘Sarah Cassidy’ on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Six Feet Under,” where she made her debut to the small screen as the ‘Singing Cactus.’ In addition to her television roles, Amanda has also appeared in dozens of national commercials for Comcast, Plavix, and Meow Mix to name a few.
BSCkids: Amanda Leighton
You have appeared on several shows, which has been your favorite?
“Make it or break it.” I had so much fun playing Wendy!
Do you share any similarities between your character on “Make It or Break it?”
I think Wendy and I both have a competitive drive to always do well. Of course, I am not as extreme as her!
Did you have to go through any training for your role on “Make It or Break it?”
Yes, before shooting I had a one on one session with the gymnastics coordinator on the show. We went to a gym, where she taught me how to start and land off of each apparatus. I got up on the vault, bars, and learned routines on both the beam and floor. Luckily I came from a background in dance so I was able to incorporate some of my own tricks in there.
Do you and the other girls on the set of the series (make it or break it) get along outside of the series?
All the girls are beautiful inside and out! We really all got along on set! They were great and made me feel really comfortable and welcome there.
What is the most awkward thing that has happened to you since you became an actress?
People recognizing me from the show, it’s funny because it’s usually when I have my hair pulled up because that’s how I wore it for the majority of the show.
Are there any actors or actresses that stand out as being the most inspirational for you?
Amy Adams, Rachael McAdams, Robert Downey Jr., Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Saoirse Ronan, and many more!
I read that you enjoy video games, so if you had to recommend one game that every gamer should play, what would it be?
Final Fantasy
If acting hadn’t worked out, what would have been your alternate profession choice?
I would have either gone into video editing or something to do with animals. For the longest time I wanted to be a marine biologist.
