Weetzie Bat doesn’t fit in. She never has, but that isn’t a problem. She is creative, clever, and smart, with wicked cool friends who don’t fit in, either. Twenty-three years ago, she appeared when writer Francesca Lia Block published Weetzie Bat, and now, she has offered an explanation of how Weetzie Bat came to be. Those of us who have followed Weetzie on her journey to discover herself and her place in the world – if there is indeed a place for her – will find her evolution from bullied, abandoned Louise Bat into the adventurous Weetzie a wonderful story about finding the good in yourself, your true friends, and doing the best you can with your life even when everything seems awful.
Weetzie has a guardian angel her father seems to have left her when he moved far away, leaving her alone with her drunk mother who used to be pretty and happy but now just sleeps in dirty nightgowns with a bottle in her hand. Her ‘angel’ is a sweet boy who is wanted by the pretty but mean girls at school, and he has a little sister who curses those she hates with disfigured Barbie dolls. If you’ve never read a book in this series, this newest book is a good place to start. Once you start following Weetzie, you’ll want to keep going without looking back.
