BSCkids recently got to interview the newest YouTube Musical Sensation, Jenna Rose. She spoke to us about her new found fame, her future, and her single, “My Jeans.”
Jenna Rose Swerdlow began performing at age 2 with her start in community theatre and moving on to regional productions and Off-Broadway productions. She has performed in over 18 plays. In October of 2010, her first music video, “My Jeans”, was posted on YouTube, and a few short months later, became a viral sensation, garnering over a million views and earning her instant notoriety. The success of “My Jeans” continues to grow, with the video at over 14.5 million views as of October 2011. Follow up songs “O.M.G” & “Don’t Give Up” have added to her popularity, and she has been interviewed by major news networks, received front page headlines on several newspapers & performed live in concert at Westbury Music Fair.
What was the process you went though to make your first video, “My Jeans”?
I was in a showcase performing two original songs at Sir Studios, a big recording studio in NYC, after auditioning for a revival TV show of The Cheetah Girls. Baby Triggy was there, he’s in the music video, and his dad was there too. Triggy went back to his studio and wrote the My Jeans song for me. He tracked me down and I recorded the song in his studio in 30 minutes. I actually loved the song and wanted to make a music video with me and my close friends having fun. We made the video a few months after the song was recorded, and my dad put it on you tube.
Why did you choose that song to be the first video you made?
I chose that song to be a music video because I loved the beat, loved that we were using characters from TV shows I watched and it was very catchy.
Tell us about what you do in your free time, when you aren’t performing.
Well in my free time, I’m studying, rehearsing and tweeting my fans and writing to them on Facebook, I also like to be involved in charitable causes and always try to learn new songs to try. I have singing lessons in between and love to shop for clothes.
What do your friends think about you becoming a YouTube sensation?
My friends don’t think of me as a YouTube sensation, I’m just Jenna, just like I was before the excitement of My Jeans becoming viral.
What is the craziest thing that has happened since you started becoming more famous?
The craziest things that have happened since I became famous, is that I don’t think I am famous and when I go to the mall, ill be mobbed by people that recognize me and it’s like oh ok, so I am known.it clicks then. When Jeans first became viral I had a private audition at Nickelodeon in NYC when I came out of the building, I turned the corner and bought candy, there was a line waiting to go into the theater, I heard someone scream Jenna Rose the Jeans Girl and the line came apart and everyone was taking photos of me and them with their cell phones. That was sooo much fun. I felt great,
Do you still get nervous when you are on stage?
Sometimes I get nervous on stage, when kids will start teasing me, saying Jenna where’s your jeans? Or laughing, it makes me uncomfortable, but I work through it, otherwise I love being on stage and performing, and the nerves just vanish.
Do you plan to do much more acting, or focus on music?
I love to act and love to sing, so I would love to do both. Right now I am on a pilot called Which Way, which is about kids going to performing arts school in Harlem, I’m filming more on Sunday, November 6th, Two weeks ago Steiner Block casting called me from Los Angeles to audition by tape for a new Disney pilot, that was really exciting.
When are you going to release your next single?
My new single called Number One is on you tube right now, and I think that it might be the song that will hopefully get me signed by a major label. I love that song.
