This week’s episode of So Random, aired on August 7th, featured the musical group Mindless Behavior, and had an array of about 7 sketches. I found this episode to better than last weeks episode in terms of both content and presentation. Although I think they use the laugh track a bit too much during each skit.
The episode had a cold opening, which is a scene that is showed before the opening of the show is actually played. The opening was an infomercial for a cocoon that parents can put their teens in to get them through their “gawky teen years”. I thought this was pretty funny. All teens and former teens like myself can relate the awkwardness of growing up and the want to disappear for five years while it all goes away. If only parents could help you get through being squeaky voiced with rough skin, and overwhelming feeling of frustration by just putting you in a cocoon for five years! It would be great. Oh to be young and awkward again…
After the cold opening they actually did their normal opening of addressing the crowd with the upcoming show. This time, however, they used a regular character from their show to do the opening. I thought he was slightly annoying. I know he was meant to jokingly frustrate the audience by saying the actors, or Randoms, weren’t going to show up but maybe it was too much. I mean if I had just flipped channels and was trying to decide what to watch, it might have turned me away from wanting to stay with it.
The next skit was played little by little through the whole episode and was referred to as “The Coolest Kid in School”. I loved this one. I thought it was actually pretty funny. The coolest kid in school can sharpen his pencil with his wit because he is so awesome. He also can ALWAYS find Waldo. What a pro! On picture day, other kids parents ask for wallet size pictures of him. During school fire drills, woman and children let him go first…. Because he is the coolest kid in school! I loved these. I “LOLed”. These sets of sketches are similar to the Chuck Norris jokes that float around but for a younger crowd that might not know who Chuck Norris is.
I really didn’t like the next sketch they did. They said the word fart a lot. I may not think its funny because I am no longer that age. Either way I just thought it was a bit overkill. The joke landed way before the skit ended.
One of the funnier skits was called, “The Platowski Brothers band”. This was a spoof of all those sibling bands that exist nowadays. They referred to it as, “Just like Justin Bieber if he had a brother he hated and always sand about.” This was pretty funny as well. Every kid with siblings can relate to the rivalry that takes place. At one time or another kids arguing constantly it seems. This was no different.
Their musical guest this week was the musical group, Mindless Behavior. I have never heard this group before but I can say I enjoyed it. The choreographed dancing was very in sync and very well done. The music wasn’t band and I thought the lyrics were pretty good to. I like how this show doesn’t book musical guests who sing about inappropriate things. I think the music so far has been really well chosen.
