We have really been getting some great interviews lately! Today BSCkids is proud to present an interview with Emma Lahana who plays Charlotte Monroe on the CW series Hellcats. You can read a quick bio of Emma below and then we get right into the questions.
Canadian actor, New Zealand born Emma Lahana, is currently taking the small screen by storm on the hit CW series ‘Hellcats’. The series follows the competitive and wild world of college cheerleading. Emma plays Charlotte Monroe on the show, the sister of High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale’s character Savannah. From a strict Baptist family, Charlotte ends up getting into a lot of trouble, and with her sister’s ex-boyfriend of all people. ‘Hellcats’ airs on Tuesdays at 9/8C on CW. http://www.cwtv.com/shows/hellcats
Emma is also widely recognized for her role on the popular CBC series ‘Heartland’. On the series, Emma plays Blair, a girl who winds up not being as innocent as she originally seemed. ‘Heartland’ is a sprawling family drama that follows one family’s highs and lows on their horse ranch. http://www.cbc.ca/heartland/
The talented performer is an indie film gem, recently appearing in two popular indie flicks: ‘Dear Mr. Gacy’, and ‘The Girlfriend Experience’, which was nominated for Best Canadian Feature at the Whistler Film Festival in 2008.

BSCkids: Emma, how did you come to get the part of Charlotte Monroe on Hellcats?
Emma: I went on an audition, with two really short scenes. I didn’t know at the time Charlotte was Ashley’s characters sister. I read in front of the wonderful Allan Arkush, the executive producer and directed the first episode I was in. We played around with the scenes a little bit, then about a week later I was in cheerleading rehearsals!
How has it been working with Ashley Tisdale?
Fantastic, she’s become a really good friend. Its a blessing to work with someone you can trust when you have to do lots of emotional/tough scenes, and someone you can have fun with and really enjoy the fact that we are so lucky to be doing what we love.
How do you relate to your character and how do you prepare for the filming? How different is the preparation from working on Heartland?
I feel like the preparation is the same – doing my work prior to getting to set. I think its really important as an actor to be prepared cause then you are ready for whatever comes your way when the cameras are rolling.
I don’t relate to Charlotte all that much – our upbringings were completely different. Charlotte was so sheltered and not given much opportunity to develop her own way of thinking, a lot of that shifts and her eyes are opened when the pregnancy happens. I can relate to that curiosity and interest to expand and learn – I think it just happens for Charlotte about 15 years later than most people.
We have yet to see a scene with Charlotte and Noah? Will they interact in a future episode?
No – that’s all left to your imagination.
Any funny behind the scenes things that have happened while on the set?
I had to wear “chicken cutlets” (bra inserts) for the pregnancy. And a couple of the boys (who i won’t call out) used to steal them and put them down their shirts, and play with them.
Will we see the baby by the season finale?
You will have to watch to find out 😉
Charlotte’s pregnancy has complicated the Monroe family. Being a religious family will we see how this has affected their standing in the community?
The Monroe family does end up being affected in the community – but by something completely different.
What draws you to a project and what do you look for in a role?
I find all roles exciting to be honest. Being able to put on a different character for the day and figuring out what to bring to get that character of paper and into person is always such a fun and
exciting challenge.
What would you like to work on in the future? Any new projects you can tell us about?
I reeeeeally want to work with Darren Aronofsky. He’s my favourite film maker. And for Canadian directors I would love to work with Carl Bessai. Playing alongside Sam Rockwell wouldn’t be too shabby either.
What sort of hobbies do you have and what do you like to do when you are not on the set?
I run and work out a lot, and I take ballet classes a few times a week. I’m an avid reader, and really enjoy spending hours in a coffee shop reading books. And I love spending quality time with all my amazing friends!
Any more juicy Hellcats things you can tell us about?
Just to watch it 🙂
Thanks go out to Emma for taking the time to talk to us. Make sure you tune into Hellcats to check her out!
