I recently had the chance to interview young and rising star Savanah Wiltfong, who stars in Dear Lemon Lima. We talked about her movie, plans, and of course any advice she has for young hopefuls. You will find a trailer for her movie at the bottom of this interview. Dear Lemon Lima came out March 4th on video on demand, Culver Plaza Theaters in LA, and iTunes.
Sarah: Tell us a little bit about your new movie, Dear Lemon Lima.
Savanah: Well it was filmed in the summer of 2008 in Washington , and was a 6 week shoot! As you may know it is about a young girl named Vanessa who goes through her first heartbreak and also deals with going to a new school, it is a coming of age film!
Tell us a little about your character in the film.
I played the lead role, Vanessa, and she is very mousy and shy at the beginning. She also starts the movie heartbroken; through the entire film she discovers who she is and learns so many life lessons, so I think every girl at some point can relate to her.
How much in real life are you like your character in the film?
I think when it comes to our passion for love and art, we have a lot in common! I also had my first love and heartbreak around her age actually. It was right before I auditioned the part that I went through the same heartbreak she did, so during the whole shoot I used that to channel into her.
The film, which has had limited release since 2009, has gotten rave reviews; how do you feel about that?
I feel wonderful! I am so proud and thankful to everyone who was involved in the project, all the actors who supported me in my role, every fan, and, person who ever came to watch it and enjoyed it! I am just so happy it has gotten this far!
What are your thoughts are on this film?
I believe it is an excellent work of art with tons of heart, and personal touch, I will forever be touched for being a part of it! It is a movie everyone can relate to and I hope I see it keep going in its line of success.
Was this your first film?
Yes, it was my first film, and actually the role of Vanessa was my first audition ever!
How did you land this exciting role?
My Mom received an e-mail asking for a young Yup ‘ ik girl to play a role in a movie, and since I am part Yup ‘ ik myself, my Mom thought it would be a wonderful thing for me to try! So I first read off a script and posted the video on youtube, then was asked for a call back in Anchorage, then, after all that I got another call back and was asked to fly to Seattle for a 3rd audition. I was amazed! The next day my Mom called me up and asked for “Vanessa Lemor”–that ‘ s how I found out I landed the role!
What are your upcoming plans?
I did a project last spring called Coldwood. It is a paranormal/thriller and was filmed here in Alaska , you can find it on facebook! Well, since there are so many projects coming to Alaska now, I hope to find some more work here, and I am home-schooled so it makes it a lot easier. I hope to continue modeling, and maybe try some singing too, and also, finish high school!
What kind of role would you love to get next?
I am really up to try any role, maybe I could try being the bad girl, you never know. I am just looking forward to any new projects that come my way!
What advice do you have for young actors?
My advice to young actors would be to just go for it! Keep at it but always have fun with what you are doing! Acting is hard work like any job, but, if you ask me it is also one of the funnest jobs! So for those who want to be actors, just work hard and have fun with it! Dreams do come true.
