As part of our gluten free coverage at Summer Fancy Food Show we start with sunflower butter. Do you have a child that is allergic to nuts, peanuts, or gluten? If not I am sure that you know someone that is. Here is where Seth Ellis Chocolatier from Boulder, Colorado comes in. They make an alternate version of the peanut butter cup with sunflower butter and either milk or dark chocolate. Not only did we get a chance to taste them at the show, but they were also kind enough to allow us to bring some home for our children to taste test.
While I love the peanut butter cup, it smells and tastes “heavy” while the Sun Cups have creamier center that is light and fresh. The milk chocolate part of the candy was also of high quality and my wife gave the dark chocolate the thumbs up as well. I found it to be a totally different, but likable experience in comparison to the peanut butter cup. Here is where it gets a bit tricky as the boys both had a taste and were not so enthusiastic. I think this stems from the fact that they both love peanut butter and this was “different.” At the same time neither one of them gave any of the piece back that we gave them to try.
I think these are great to have around for those children that come to play dates and can not eat peanut butter and are/or are allergic to gluten. Plus Seth Ellis has the green angle done to perfection. So if you child has these allergies the Sun Cups will be a wonderful experience for them as the rest of their friends consume the peanut butter variety. There is also something to be said for having a candy that looks the same as a peanut butter cup to help the children feel comfortable when everyone else has the peanut butter variety. These will be on our Halloween party list for this year!
Let us not forget that the Sun Cups are also organic and Rainforest Alliance Certified with a home compostable wrapper.
