Why Illumination’s “Not Alone” Could Be One Of Animation’s Most Interesting Original Films

In a landscape increasingly dominated by sequels, reboots and familiar franchises, Illumination is preparing to remind audiences that original stories can still launch into orbit.

Freshly announced during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Universal and Illumination have officially unveiled their upcoming 2027 animated feature, Not Alone. Set for release on April 16, 2027, the film combines romance, science-fiction adventure and a trio of adorable extraterrestrial troublemakers into what could become one of animation’s most intriguing original offerings in the years ahead.

Leading the voice cast are Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet and Emmy-nominated actress Selena Gomez.

Chalamet stars as Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic who enjoys a quiet and largely solitary life. Gomez voices Fran, a brilliant astro-botanist working to develop the world’s first plant-fueled rocket.

While the pair initially come together to prepare for the rocket’s historic launch, things quickly become more complicated than either expected. Not only do sparks begin to fly between the two would-be innovators, but their lives are suddenly disrupted by the arrival of three tiny alien fugitives seeking refuge on Earth.

The extraterrestrial trio—Dunk, Welly and Shirm—are attempting to evade an overzealous interplanetary law officer named Zandro. Seeing Fran’s experimental rocket as their best chance to return home, the unlikely visitors turn Joe and Fran’s already complicated mission into an adventure that spans far beyond the stars.

Additional cast members include Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, Jamie Demetriou, Brett Goldstein, Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris.

Behind the camera, the project brings together a collection of longtime Illumination talent. The film is directed by Eric Guillon, whose work has helped define the visual identity of the studio through the Despicable Me and Minions franchises. Guillon is joined by co-directors Claire Dogson and Jonathan Del Val, both veterans of several of Illumination’s biggest productions.

The film is being produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, whose studio has spent the last decade establishing itself as one of animation’s most commercially successful powerhouses.

What makes Not Alone especially noteworthy is that it arrives during a period when original animated features have become increasingly rare among major theatrical releases. While audiences continue to embrace beloved legacy franchises, there is also growing excitement whenever a major animation studio introduces an entirely new world, cast of characters and mythology.

Between its science-fiction setting, romantic comedy elements and family-friendly alien adventure, Not Alone appears positioned to offer something that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.

As animation continues its current creative renaissance, projects like Not Alone serve as an important reminder that the future of the medium isn’t built solely on returning favorites. Sometimes the most exciting journeys begin with a story audiences have never seen before.

With more details expected as production continues, animation fans may want to keep this one firmly on their radar as the countdown to 2027 begins.
