Netflix is going all in on its new animated retelling of the classic Cinderella story with Steps.
First reported back in December, Steps offers a fresh take on the familiar fairy tale by shifting the focus to Cinderella’s stepsisters as they prepare to enter the royal ballroom.
Steps follows the story of Cinderella’s so-called “evil” stepsisters, Lilith and Margot. When the misunderstood Lilith is blamed for hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand, she accidentally turns her sister Margot into a frog and leaves the kingdom vulnerable to a prince-obsessed mean girl. Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella — along with a surprisingly dreamy troll — to save the kingdom, repair the fractured fairy tale, and prove that even villains deserve their own happily ever after.
Following the initial announcement, casting for the film has officially been set, with Stephanie Hsu voicing Margot and Ali Wong as Lilith. Joining them as Cinderella is Amanda Seyfried.
In addition to rounding out its leading cast, Netflix has confirmed that the film is set to release later this year, with more details expected as the premiere approaches.
With a strong lineup of talent and a modern twist on a timeless story, Steps is shaping up to be a fresh take worth keeping an eye on.
