Celebrate a Year of Anime at Atlanta’s Biggest Anime Celebration

Anime, manga, gaming, cosplay, and Japanese pop culture took center stage as Anime Weekend Atlanta celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025.

Known to fans as AWA, the long-running convention marked three decades of bringing anime enthusiasts together in downtown Atlanta for a multi-day celebration of the medium and the vibrant community built around it.

As one of the Southeast’s premier anime-focused fan events, attendees from across the country gathered at the Georgia World Congress Center for four days of panels, performances, shopping, and shared fandom experiences.

The anniversary weekend united artists, vendors, performers, and industry professionals under one roof in the heart of Atlanta. Among those on the convention floor was BSCKids, bringing you everything you need to know from this milestone celebration.

What Is Anime Weekend Atlanta?

Established in 1995, Anime Weekend Atlanta has grown from a regional gathering into a cornerstone event within the Southeast convention circuit and the broader North American anime community.

Over the past 30 years, the convention has expanded significantly — from occupying sections of local hotels, including its longtime home at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel & Convention Center, to hosting attendees at the expansive Georgia World Congress Center. The 2024 venue transition reflected both sustained attendance growth and AWA’s increasing presence within the anime convention landscape.

While Atlanta is also home to major fan events like MomoCon and Dragon Con, Anime Weekend Atlanta distinguishes itself with an anime-first focus. From curated panels and industry guests to concerts and cultural programming, the convention remains dedicated to celebrating Japanese entertainment and its global impact.

Historically held in late September or October, AWA has often embraced a seasonal autumn atmosphere. In recent years, however, the convention has shifted toward a wintertime setting, offering attendees a festive holiday backdrop. Regardless of the season, AWA maintains a distinct charm that blends high-energy programming with a welcoming sense of community — the kind that leaves fans feeling both fulfilled and a little bittersweet when closing ceremonies arrive.

As a four-day event, Anime Weekend Atlanta offers a wide range of programming and attractions for fans of all interests. Once badges are picked up, attendees can explore everything from shopping and gaming to live performances and industry discussions.

Guests
The 2025 lineup featured a strong mix of English-language voice actors, Japanese talent, and musical guests, reflecting AWA’s commitment to bridging cultures. Notable guests included Rolling Quartz, Megan Shipman, Mariya Ise, MADKID, Emi Lo, AJ Beckles, and Aya Uchida, among others.

Anime in the Heart of Atlanta

While Anime Weekend Atlanta is the centerpiece of the celebration, its downtown setting plays a key role in shaping the overall experience.

Hosted at the Georgia World Congress Center, AWA places attendees in the center of Atlanta’s convention corridor. The venue is surrounded by host hotels, allowing fans to move easily between panels, meetups, and evening events.

Just steps away, visitors can relax at Centennial Olympic Park or explore iconic attractions like Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola. For out-of-town attendees, the accessibility of downtown Atlanta turns the convention weekend into a full destination experience.

Beyond the convention center, the city’s food scene and cultural energy provide even more to explore. From Southern comfort staples to diverse late-night dining options, Atlanta reflects the same creativity and vibrancy found on the convention floor.

The Impact of AWA

Over the past three decades, Anime Weekend Atlanta has continually evolved — expanding in size, shifting venues, and adapting to new eras of fandom. What began as a regional gathering has grown into one of the Southeast’s premier anime conventions, steadily building momentum on the national stage.

That growth is reflected not only in attendance numbers, but in execution. From thoughtfully curated panel programming and diverse vendor selections to guest lineups that bridge both Western and Japanese entertainment industries, AWA demonstrates a clear commitment to quality and cultural exchange.

Step inside the Georgia World Congress Center during convention weekend and the energy is immediate. The buzz of conversation, the flash of cosplay photography, and the excitement surrounding packed panels create an atmosphere that builds steadily through to the closing ceremony.

Having attended the 30th anniversary celebration firsthand, BSCKids can confidently say that Anime Weekend Atlanta delivers a well-organized, fan-focused experience that continues to raise the bar. As the convention looks ahead to its 31st year, its trajectory suggests that its influence — both within the Southeast and beyond — will only continue to grow.
