Spoilers for DUCKTALES – “The Beagle Birthday Massacre!” are below…don’t read on if you don’t want to learn about Magica De Spell and Lena in the new version of DuckTales 2017.
During some time on the beach with the boys going out kayaking, Webby meets a new character Lena and at first we were shaking our head thinking, here we go, another throw away episodes where we don’t even see Scrooge or anyone else. How wrong we were though, this episode is a game changer. Love or hate we also get introduced to a bunch of new Beagle Boys, some crazier than the next, but it is Ma Beagle’s birthday so everyone would be there. Boy does Ma have a lot of kids, all turning out much different.
My first instinct is why does Lena want to be friends with Webby with what seems to be a rather large age difference and then a throw away line about an amulet that she is wearing as jewelry we keep watching. Lena is setting her up, but we still don’t really know why at this point, she plays into Webby’s naivety as well as her sense of adventure leading her to the Beagle Boys party, knowing they will have to escape and lead to a trust bond being formed. We might even say that she ends up getting herself captured on purpose to seal the deal. Webby and Lena then bond over a common joke they have while they were escaping from the Beagle Boys, acting like they are English Royalty, and instant friends.
So the ending of the episode starts to come to a close and then the real fun begins. Lena uses that amulet to summon something or someone and we come to find out it is a shadow of Magica De Spell and Lena tells her she is in (aka Webby trusts her). WOW oh WOW this is what we all signed up for. So this means a lot of things we are thinking. The Number One Dime is back into regular play after being introduced in a previous episode, we should start to see some larger crazy magic type adventures now, and hopefully Scrooge will come to the front of the show again. We loved Magica in the original series and comics and this is a great start to bringing her back. The other larger question becomes is Lena Magica’s daughter or just one of her gang? (Edit: she says Aunt so it is her neice) How long before Scrooge and his family find out that Lena isn’t who she says she is? This along with the Della mystery seem like they will be interesting, but they also seem a long time coming, let’s get to the meat of these characters already.
