Disney XD will debut a new program dedicated to video games and gaming on Saturday, July 15th on Disney XD, called D|XP (just make sure you use DXP if you want to search it out). While I find this is a great move from Disney it is one that we did not see coming. D|XP will not only show games, but it will also give us a look at the publishers, gaming events, and gaming personalities in the industry making it an inside look at gaming. There will be content produced in collaboration with all sorts of teams including IGN, ESL (Electronic Sports League), Warner Bros. Television Group, ESPN, Disney Digital Network and more. The content will be geared towards an audience of 13+ and will air at 9 p.m. on that first Saturday.
Disney is looking to position itself into the gaming market by attaching itself not just to reviewing, but rather to the gaming culture itself, with pieces on why people game, the politics of gaming and other stories. By keeping up with Esports they are hedging their bets on what we consider a huge new market. Entering this market as well as gearing up to an older demographic may be the start of something new for Disney XD and we totally approve. Keeping their audience around after the tween years is something that we seeing happen with the announcement of D|XP and shows like Andi Mack. Disney is gearing up for a whole new demographic out there and they look poised to do it successfully. Bringing on a stable of YouTube personalities to D|XP also makes a lot of sense and we applaud them for that as well. Stay tuned on July 15th to see how well they tackle the gaming industry and bring a new audience to their channel.
