Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer – Hit Or Miss?

Subterranean Summer

Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer reminds me of something, and that something was so super good that my excitement meter is stuck full on the right. This Aaron Springer show has me feeling a bit like we may be in for something special, like we had with Gravity Falls and that is a great thing. So let us put talk about how Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer could be the next show that pushes the animation meter in the family friendly arena and determine if we think it is going to be a hit or a miss as we have not seen too much coverage for it just yet with less than a month to go before it airs on June 3rd at multiple times during the day if you don’t happen to have a DVR.

From what we hear, Aaron Springer had been working on this series for a bit before it was official picked up and I think that means we should be looking at a polished product. Now I am not sure, but it also seems like this will be a one season product as well, like Gravity Falls was, based on the title.  Aaron also directed several episodes of Gravity Falls so we are all very hopeful that is has the same appeal and overall story arc. The thing that I worry about though was that Gravity Falls relied on an overall mystery where Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer is going to rely on the overall story arc being that they need to fix the Cheeserator, a giant drilling machine to be able to get back. Will they have to search for parts in this underground world? Will they be looking for someone to help them fix it? Will they just need help finding their way home? These are all good guesses and the journey itself and who they meet while on this summer adventure will be the exciting part, but having some meat of a story makes us invested, and this show has a chance to bring us in with a great story and some fun.

“BILLY DILLEY’S SUPER-DUPER SUBTERRANEAN SUMMER” – “Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer,” an animated comedy series from Emmy-Award winning director Aaron Springer (Disney’s “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts), premieres with multiple airings SATURDAY, JUNE 3 (7:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 8:30 p.m. ET/PT) on Disney XD.  New episodes will continue to roll out daily through Thursday, June 15. The series follows the adventures of an eccentric science-obsessed seventh-grader, Billy Dilley, and his lab partners Zeke and Marsha, whose summer break takes an unexpected turn when they get stuck in a bizarre, magical world beneath the earth’s surface. They are bring some incredible voice talent to the table with Tom Kenny and fun YouTube star Catherine Wayne along with Aaron who it is looking like we voice Billy. From the information out there, this was not originally the choice for Billy, but it would give Aaron more control of what he is looking to accomplish.

Produced by Disney Television Animation, “Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer” stars Springer as Billy, Tom Kenny (“SpongeBob SquarePants”) as Zeke and YouTube star Catherine Wayne (“Animalist”) as Marsha.”

Now on the animation style…I am in love with it, this is the type of animation that I enjoy personally and I know I am in the minority when I say the new Duck Tales is not my cup of tea when we talk about animation style. The characters all look great and we are all totally looking forward to meeting Zeke and Marsha as well as all of the inhabitants of this subterranean world. This should be a “smart” cartoon that is going to be able to appeal both to the kids and the adults like only a few other cartoons are able to. Hoping that this show will spark some conversation at the dinner table like other cartoons have done in the past.

Totally ready for June 3rd to roll around so we can sit together in front of the television and watch what I believe is going to be a new Summer Cartoon Hit for Disney on Disney XD, Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer.
