“Pew, pew! Skreeee! Ka-BOOM! Poof! Wah, wah, wa-a-a-ah!” Just saying these out loud, are they familiar to you? Or are you thinking I’m writing in some gibberish foreign language? Well, it could be considered a different language – the language of Video Games!
You’re probably thinking I’m pretty strange at this moment considering I’m an adult and talking to you about video games. Ha ha, well, trust me, I get that a lot. A lot of kids I meet talk about video games and when I join in, they look at me like I’m a being from outer space. I can’t tell you how quick they become quiet and contemplate the fact that an adult has somehow invaded their childhood. My kids, on the other hand, happen to know and love the fact that I’m a video game fanatic. Especially when I, as the adult, can fix their game systems with no problems (I just really love technology).
I was born in the mid-80’s and grew up loving video games. My first ever gaming system was called an Atari, a very popular game console back in the 80’s. As a matter of fact, I loved it so much I self-taught myself how to hook it up. Back when I was 6, I wanted to play the Atari. Unfortunately it was not hooked up. My dad spent hours on it the day before to get it to work with our VCR and television. Upset, I called my mom at work. I had to “wait until daddy comes home”. Well, my mother comes home an hour later and, what do you know? The video game system is hooked up and I’m playing away. My mother was shocked, but proud of her little girl. My father was speechless when he heard about my great Atari hookup. What he couldn’t do in one day, I did in less than an hour! Pretty neat, right? As a child, I was desperate to play those video games!
Anyways, over the years I grew up with all sorts of gaming systems I was the proud player of. Gaming platforms I’ve had the opportunity of trying out are Atari, Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, GameCube, PSP, Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, XBox, XBox 360, Gameboy, and Nintendo 3DS. Not only have I played on all these different consoles, I still own/have owned most of them.
Of course not all video games are limited to these fantastic platforms. No, there are several more out there. Did you know that computers are also considered great for gaming? Yeah! All those computer games you play, plus ones that are suited for original consoles also are made for computers. That game you play on your XBOX 360? You can probably get it for computers, too! Fortunately, there is also a nice thing called “Plug-n-Play” devices where you easily plug them into your television. For my old school generation, be happy! I can’t tell you how happy I was when I bought a mini plug-n-play Atari with several of my old favorites included on it!
Because of my love for video games, I’ve been considered what everybody lovingly calls a “Gamer”. Yep, I certainly am. I have a passion for playing all sorts of video games ranging from “E” for everybody to the highest rating possible.Honestly though I prefer my old school games like “Winter Olympics,” “Sonic The Hedgehog,” “Donkey Kong,” “Super Mario Bros.,” “Pitfall,” “The Legend Of Zelda” and other awesomely created games!
Certainly all of you must have your top favorites, right? Go ahead and check out my top 5 favorite games for myself and my kids below! Maybe one of them is yours!
“Super Mario Bros”
An old school game originally created for Nintendo! Playing one or two players, you are either Mario or Luigi whose only mission is to rescue the princess! Unfortunately, each time you get there, she’s “already in another castle”! Journey through several levels filled with hard obstacles to overcome like carnivorous plants, snapping turtles or large cliff gaps. Make sure you break the bricks to either grow bigger or get some neat firepower! Get a star and you’ll go far! This game was such a hit, they made several sequels for Mario himself! Trust me, as an old school lover, this game is the best yet!
“LEGO”
LEGO games are suitable for computers, Playstations, Wii, XBOX 360 and other platforms. LEGO isn’t simply just a game, it’s full-blown adventures that will make you smile! What we all once played with as children became designed in a virtual world of Lego people! Our favorite movies are brought to life in LEGO adventures such as “Indiana Jones”, “Batman”, “Harry Potter”, “Star Wars” “Pirates Of The Carribean” and so much more! Kids of all ages will enjoy being a hero or villain facing several enemies and completing missions! I think my favorite parts of these LEGO games is when you defeat a villain, they break apart in little LEGO pieces!
“Minecraft”
The game was originally played online or came as a computer game. It can also be played on the XBOX 360. Minecraft is a fun building game. Your character can build whatever they want from small huts to large castles to even grand cities for others to enjoy. You learn how to gather ingredients and combine them to concoct different building materials for certain things as well. Learn how to build up and break down while making sure you are safe from whatever lurks in the area at night. *Shiver* Definitely a fun game for everybody to enjoy!
“Sims”
Sims can played on different gaming platforms such as computers, PSPs, 3Ds and XBOX 360. It is a fun RPG, or role-playing game, you can become addicted to. You create your own character(s) and help them live their daily lives eating, sleeping, cooking, working, exercising, music, swimming, gardening and a whole lot more! More kid-friendly Sims include ones where you can take care of pets! This can also help your child to learn a bit about responsibility which is a very good thing!
“Kinect Adventures”
This game is an XBOX 360 and Kinect-associated video game. Basically, you put yourself within this amazing adventure of different obstacles, rafting down rapids and hand ball! With this adventure, you’ll be moving around everywhere using your hands and feet! You’ll be able to have loads of fun, plus get some exercise! Trust me, kids will get so exhausted, there won’t be a problem getting them to bed!
