Have you ever met that one person who became a big part of your life? Someone who was once a stranger but became the one who you could rely on always? The one who always has a shoulder for you to cry on, a listening ear and arms open when you need that hug? Everybody has found at least one person who fits all these comforting ways. This kind of person is what you’d call a friend, one who you share a tight bond with.
Friendship has always been a very important factor in my life. It’s actually one of the closest bonds you can have in your life. Aside from family, friends are extremely important in one’s life. Did you know that friends can be categorized in different ways? The people you interact with daily, in person or not, could be put in any kind of category like acquaintances, co-workers, classmates, childhood buddies, long-distance, close friends, boyfriend/girlfriend or best friends. Sometimes a member of your family can be considered one of your best friends. It’s true, because I think of my mother and sisters as my best friends.
To me, without friendship, this world could be a dull place. If you never had that friend to keep you on your toes when you feel like falling, you’d simply fall right down. Without that comforting hug when you get hurt, the pain might just continue. What about those emotions you’ve been keeping inside, but had no one to tell them to? They just may stay locked inside forever.
Sometimes one might feel they don’t need someone to comfort them or talk to or hug them and say everything will be all right. But being able to have that one person who understands who you are, staying by your side, is a wonderful feeling. In fact, it might be one of the best feelings in the whole world. I’m pretty sure mostly everybody has a bestie or close friend in their lives. With them you can go shopping, chill at the skate park, ride the rides at the carnival, study together, sleep over at each other’s house and so on. I think everybody needs that bond of friendship with somebody that resides close to their heart. As long as it is someone you can count on, who knows you best and will be there in times of need, they can truly be called a friend.
Though I have to say friendships aren’t solely based on these ideas alone. Even with these wonderful aspects of a friendship, a variety is also nice to have. During high school, my entire circle of friends I have, or had, came from all sorts of cliques that barely meshed together. My friendship squad consisted of otakus (anime lovers), pranksters, geeky, laid-back, risk-takers, open-minded, shy, athletic, studious, intellectual, humorous and more. This variety, plus their reliability, keeps me on edge every day whether we have conversations, hang out or just be in one another’s presence. It’s always nice to surround yourself with quite an abundance of friends, don’t you think?
Because of my love for the bond of friendships, I’ve dived into movies and series to see close-knit bonds! Check out my favorite friendships – whether they be normal or unique – below:
Mulan and Mushuu (“Mulan”)
This was a great friendship. Mushuu, a guardian spirit of Fa Mulan’s family was sent to bring Mulan back after she ran off to take her father’s place in the war. But he went against them instead to help Mulan become a great warrior in the Emperor’s army. These two grew very close in the time of first meeting to the end where he helped ensure Mulan’s victory, earning a great respect from her family and the country of China. The friendship was filled with hilarious moments and sweetness over the time of the movies. Wouldn’t you love to have a guardian spirit to hang with?
Elisa and Goliath (“Gargoyles”)
Though she had a nice friendship with all of the gargoyles in the Wyvern Clan, Elisa was noticeably more attached to their leader, Goliath. In situations, these two always had each others’ backs whether they were taking down criminals or somehow end up in odd situations (Avalon Saga has plenty of those). Their closeness grew dramatically over a period of time to which they also became a couple at the end of the “Hunter’s Moon” episode trilogy. Being friends with a gargoyle could be fun seeing as you could fly around with them in the air. Though, if you have height issues, I don’t recommend it.
Charley and Biker Mice (“Biker Mice From Mars”)
Who said there wasn’t intelligent life out there? For Charley, three biker mice made the greatest friends ever! Charley, a mechanic, was the first human to ever get a peek at these alien mice, revving their bikes and saving the day. It was a great combination of friendship, to be honest. As a mechanic, she was able to fill the needs of Modo, Throttle and Vinnie (the alien biker mice), helping them fix their bikes or loan the shop when necessary. However, there was a downside to the friendship: Charley seemed to get kidnapped a lot because of her association with them, BUT they were always there to save the day! Seriously, who wouldn’t want to be friends with giant alien mice who ride motorcycles? I want to!
Riley and Maya (“Girl Meets World”)
These two are a humorous pair. Every time I see them together on the show, I have to laugh. There’s always one thing or another they’re caught up and need to find a way out. Riley and Maya really mesh together with their personalities, keen fashion sense and positive attitudes. Although there were times when a squabble might end years of sleepovers, shopping or girly gossip, somehow the situations get calmed and once more their friendship overpowers the fight. I honestly think it’s Riley’s dad, Corey, that is the glue to help mend their relationship. Sometimes it takes a third party to help you out, you know?
Mahree and Piper (“The Color of Friendship”)
This friendship was truly colorful. In a time where apartheid was lived, two girls, one from South Africa (Mahree) and the other living peacefully in the United States (Piper), meet under an exchange program. Mahree and Piper don’t see eye to eye at first, especially with different perspectives in the societies they currently live in. Living with the family though, she becomes closer to them and to Piper. The girls bond, beginning to understand one another and work through hard times (Mahree was taken from her host family due to them not being white, but sent back after Piper’s father spoke with the South African Embassy). As each day passed, the color of their friendship eventually became as beautiful as a rainbow. This friendship was actually based on true events during this time. I highly recommend watching it!
Liv and Maddie (“Liv & Maddie”)
Didn’t I say that the bond of friendship wasn’t necessarily limited to two strangers? Liv and Maddie may be identical twins with same appearances, but their personalities and mannerisms are entirely different. I think this is what helped them to create a tight-knit bond of being able to rely on one another in times of need. In situations, Maddie is there for Liv and Liv is there for Maddie. They got each others’ backs like all friends do and they help out in, sometimes, the most humorous of ways. That’s one of the reasons I love this sibling friendship. Wouldn’t you be happy if your best friend was a twin that could take your place in 7th period for that history test you already flunked once? Shh, mom and dad wouldn’t have to know! (Well, yeah in all honesty, they would. They’re parents, they ALWAYS know what you do. Trust me.)
April and the Turtles (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”)
Though April and the Ninja Turtles – Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo and Michaelangelo – have been depicted in several different ways, the friendship still remains the same. Somehow these guys always meet face to face (with April fainting half the time) and right away a bond forms. Their closeness shows that no matter how troublesome a rescue attempt might be, they’re willing to risk it all to save another. April is the Turtles’ first real friend and she means a whole lot to them and nothing could stop them from helping her. Do a 180 degree spin and April will be the same way. To each other, they are best friends and close as family. Cowabunga for this awesome friendship!
