A new year means many things; new chapters and even the start of brand-new stories. Last year we had seen more than our fair share of farewells, introductions and even returns- and there is no questioning that we will have many more thrilling head-lines as this year marches on.
But there is, perhaps, no better way to start out the new year then with an introduction of new characters as we enter their world. And fans of Disney Channel are on the brink of doing just that as we find ourselves stuck in the middle with the Diaz family.
Staring Jenna Ortega, the series is summarized as the following:
Told from Harley’s point-of-view, the slice-of life stories find the comedy in everyday life of a big family as this middle child devises creative ways to cope with — and stand out — in her family’s busy suburban Massachusetts household. The Diaz parents, Suzy and Tom, also have six other kids: Rachel the self-involved eldest; Georgie, a basketball-playing teen; Ethan, Harley’s closest ally; invincible and indestructible twins Lewie and ‘Beast;’ and the strong-willed youngest sibling, Daphne.
In the first episode of the series is noted to center around our protagonist , Harley is tasked to try and get her family out of the house in time for ceremony where she is poised to accept a community award.
Right now bar the cast -including the likes of Joe Nieves, Cerina Vincent, Ariana Greenblatt, Malachi Barton, Nicolas Bechtel, Kayla Maisonet, Ronni Hawk, Isaak Presley and prospectively Jenna Ortega- we only have the series main premise and first image of the Diaz family. So there is not a lot to really sink our teeth into, as a manner of speaking.
From what we do know, however, it seems like the series is going to be a very relatable series. Lots of people have big families and as having such are often faced with trails that can be more challenging than not. Sometimes something on paper that seems straight forward can become a feat worthy of a found memory.
Not only does the size of the family make things interesting and even perhaps provides those moments where you end up thinking back on things you have done, or just did (good times, right?), it really makes a connection. The idea of being the middle, often sometimes even forgotten, child is a common trope and even a common fact of life.
Just looking at how the various family members are described really paints a vivid image of how dynamic the family of nine is. Never mind the fact it seems like there is a wider range of ages present. The fact they are all very distantly different characters not only gives them all something that makes them really great individuals, but also will lead to conflicts. And because this is slice-of-life we will probably see a lot of those differences act as a saving grace of sorts, but also will naturally cause some very interesting things to happen- for better or worse is something time will tell.
There is a lot that can be done in slice-of-life because a lot does happen in life, and with a family both as large and dynamic as this one a lot will.
The series arrives on Disney Channel on Valentine’s Day, February fourteenth at 8:45 ET/PT. But fans are going to have to wait until March eleventh to see the ups and downs of being stuck in the middle continue weekly on Disney.
