Season’s Greetings from the Small Screen

Season’s Greetings from the Small Screen

In my last post I shared with you all only a very small and fine selection of holiday themed movies released either in theaters or direct to home media. There is, as it goes without saying, a lot of fiction out there and just a mind-blowing section of it is simply marked for the holiday season. With the likes of ABC Family, Hallmark and other major networks airing a large offering of season’s greetings non-stop we have so many options.

As great as having such a wide and diverse selection filled with faces we have seen time and time again to even that of new ones, it also sometimes leads some to fall to the side and be forgotten.

The holidays always have a strange, and even mystical at times, way of being nostalgic. Perhaps it is not better time to take a step back and re-join worlds we once entered holidays gone by.

Without waiting around until New Years to get to the point here is some season’s greetings from beloved characters as they venture into their own holiday on-goings. (And yes, I am trying to be a good authoress and not re-hash myself into putting Darkwing on the list (as tempting as it is!).  Despite being fantastic there are other series that need some love as well.)

Rugrats

“The Santa Experience”, “A Rugrats Hanukkah”, “Let It Snow”, and “Babies in Toyland”

As one of the first NickToons, Rugrats has quite the reputation for itself with nine seasons and over a hundred episodes under the dipper. With such a great deal of the series’ stories centering around life and the world around the babies it is no shocking surprise that the series did celebrate the holidays. Most series, no matter how long the run, only feature one episode with the holidays. But Rugrats is not ‘most’ series by any means and provides four very different experiences around two different holidays.

With story-lines about the fear of Santa Clause, venturing into a holiday village to even learning the meaning behind Jewish holiday Hanukkah – all though the babies’ eyes, of course- we gain a new look at the time of year we know and even perhaps even learn the meaning of a holiday we had not known much of prior.

Doug

“Doug’s Christmas Story”

Typically so many holiday themed tales are filled with glee, good-tidings and well-wishes. As great as that is and enjoyable, sometimes even the best actions can turn out in ways we may not expect.

And that is what drives the Christmas tale of Nick’s (and later Disney’s) Doug. This slice-of-life series about a boy by the name of Doug who like everyone else is trying to navigate life and what comes his way. Despite the title inferring that it is heavily a play on the classic Christmas Story and that the focus primarily on Doug himself, both prove to be incorrect.

When Porkchop, Doug’s dog, finds himself being accused for attacking BeBe the otherwise joyful time of the year is spun on its head as Doug must strive to prove his best friend’s innocent before time is too late.

The Proud Family

“Seven Days of Kwanzaa

I can image that this title is probably surprised to see this on the list. It has been a good while since the series has aired and like most other Disney series lacks a proper release outside the likes of iTunes.

But I digress.

In this special episode the Proud family is gearing up for Christmas, during their preparations they encounter a homeless family and invite them into their home to celebrate. After some ups and downs the two families are able to discover the true meaning of Christmas, but also of Kwanzaa.

6Teen

“Deck the Mall”, “In A Retail Wonderland”, “Snow Job”, and “How the Rent-A-Cop Stole Christmas”

As the days go by and the holiday season seeps upon us the crazier any and every retail store becomes. If you have ever been in the likes of a mall never mind even Target around this time of year you know just what I am talking about.

But as mad as it is for the customers it is even crazier for everyone working in said stores.

6Teen follows a group of six teenage friends as they deal with everything the teenage years bring and steps towards growing-up, including working first jobs at the mall.  Just off that alone you can image what possibly can happen and even go wrong.

From getting themselves locked in the mall, stressing about the holidays, and having a rent-a-cop try to end Christmas…normal everyday things around December.
