Whether you’re a child of the new generation or old school, there’s going to be your favorite shows you could watch over and over again. Being of the older generation, the famous cartoons that we loved as children almost seem like a thing of the past as their final episodes came to pass and we could see no more, except for possible reruns if we were lucky enough. Other times we could still have those old recorded episodes of the series on tape or perhaps people were kind enough to place them on DVDs for old school children’s viewing pleasure. Perhaps even online you can catch a glimpse.
With nostalgia for the past, there’s always certain series you wish could go on and on, never-ending like Peter Pan stopping his aging in Neverland. Luckily, computers and the internet have given me a happy tingling sensation being able to view favorite shows online. Unfortunately, when you’re grown up and wish to introduce your old favorites to the kids, it’s not easy. They’re more interested in the newer shows (and I honestly like some of them myself) without so much as giving them a single glance.
A love for these old school cartoons, and the popular fanbase they’ve created, should bring the idea that they need to come back! Yes! Honestly, admittedly, some of the cartoons might require a fresh new look to get kids interested in them. Older might be better, but sometimes remakes have a better chance of surviving than the earlier pieces.
Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and several other networks who sponsored these older cartoons need to pull themselves together, grab some animators and get reboots rolling! Sure Nickelodeon’s got their retro block set up with Teennick bringing back our old Nick favorites like Rugrats, Are You Afraid of the Dark? and so forth, but it doesn’t mean all children of today will sit down to watch it. Fresh new looks and storylines might be the key to get them hooked on our old faves, even if we felt they were better way back when.
So, what old school toons should get a serious reboot to introduce to the newer generation? Check out what I recommend below:
“Gargoyles”
It tells the story of a gargoyle named Goliath. His clan is cursed to stone until the castle rises above the clouds. A businessman named David Xanatos brings the Scottish castle to New York and breaks the curse. Afterward, many events occur with the meeting of Detective Elisa Maza who helps the gargoyles live in the city and protect it.
Gargoyles was one of the top rated shows on the Disney Channel back in the early 90s. At that time it always showed on what is called “Toon Disney”. This was a big favorite of mine back in the 90s and needs to get back out there, even if as a reboot!
“Street Sharks”
This show is about four brothers who end in super trouble with their scientist father’s associate, Dr. Paradigm who uses a “gene-slammer” to turn them in mutated sharks! Their father, they found out, was an unfortunate subject of the evil doctor’s as well, disappearing after being turned into an unseen monstrosity. The Street Sharks, as they call themselves, work together with their friend Benz to protect the city from any evil doing while finding a cure for themselves.
This show might not be as popular as it should be since some say it’s a “parody show” of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” with the mutations and whatnot. I am rather partial to this show as for its humor, awesome fish puns and the sweet storylines in each episode!
“Biker Mice From Mars”
The show tells the story about three alien biker mice – Throttle, Modo and Vinnie – who escape Mars and their enemy, the Plutarkians. They make their home on earth, surviving thanks to their human friend, Charley, a local mechanic in Chicago. They are there to help save the city of Chicago from being taken over by another Plutarkian known as Limburger. With their stomachs always full of root beer and hot dogs, they ride to victory on their advanced motorcycles in each episode.
Originally, this series had a reboot/new season made back in 2006, but it didn’t hold. Bringing back this series or rebooting it, kids will definitely get hooked! Though, I think the original design is way better than the 2006 one!
“SWAT Kats”
Taking place in the fictional location of Megakat City, the show follows two pilots, Chance (T-Bone) and Jake (Razor), who acts as the protectors of the city when danger calls. Throughout the series, a variety of villains appear which they must defeat. They even go head to head with the Enforcers, the city’s militarized police force, the agency these two used to work for, but were discharged from after an incident.
As a fan of felines – cats, tigers, lions, etc. – I always thought this show was interesting with its take on anthropomorphic kitties. Not only that, but who doesn’t enjoy action/adventure in which the good guys are beating the bad guys? Does this show need to shown again or get a reboot? Uh, yeah!
“TaleSpin”
The series introduces some characters from the old animated movie “The Jungle Book”, putting them in different positions in a real-life world probably back in the 1930s. It tells the story of Baloo, a pilot who runs an air cargo freight business. Due to his debts, the company was purchased by Rebecca Cunningham who hopes the business will pick up better. Baloo practically adopts an orphan named Kit who becomes his navigator. The entire series goes through ups and downs of the entire staff, but also has its fair share of adventures, such as dealing with air pirates!
With a big blast from the past in the way of characters, it’s an enjoyable series in which you will love the humor, adventures and fall in love with the personalities of the several different characters.
“Beetlejuice”
This series was based off the film “Beetlejuice.” Each episode followed the antics of the ghostly Beetlejuice and his best friend, Lydia as they explored Beetlejuice’s home, the Neitherworld or even the real world where Lydia lived.
There was always so much humor put into every moment of every single episode, that it’s not surprising it lasted about four seasons. Every time this show came on, it was a big laugh! This needs to be put on as a rerun!
“Chip-n-Dale Rescue Rangers”
Two chipmunks, Chip and Dale, start a detective agency with their three friends – Zipper, Gadget and Monterey Jack. Their usual clients include other animals or dealing with “small” crimes the police can’t handle. Usually, these five friends have continuous encounters with the mob-stylish Fat Cat or mad scientist Norton Nimnul.
Who doesn’t wanna watch a series with cute little animals dressed up and playing detective? (No hands, right?) This series was one that premiered in the late 80s and, as a child, I got overexcited about the fun, laughs and cutesy animals portrayed. Yep, I need to see this again!
“Captain Planet”
With your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!” This mid-90s series is about five teenagers given powers – earth, fire, wind, water and heart – by the Goddess Gaia. With the earth in turmoil, she recruits the teens to help save the planet from oil spills, pollution, toxic chemicals, etc. But when situations arise where they can’t do it on their own, they combine their powers to bring forth this cool fellow called Captain Planet.
This series was PSA-centric in every single episode. With different situations that mimic what can happen in reality, it was a great way to pass on the message of how we can help save our planet from devastation. Plus, it had an awesome super-powered hero to help save the day and teach lessons on what was right and wrong.
So, what do you think? What other shows should really be seen again?
