Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures will be taking us on yet another epic journey this year within the world of dinosaurs in its new and upcoming movie, The Good Dinosaur.
The announcement of a second movie from Disney-Pixar is a big one after the commercial success of Inside Out that was released in June. This will make 2015 the first year that Disney-Pixar has released two films in the same year. While Inside Out takes us on an adventure with emotions that run a bit wild inside a young girl’s head, The Good Dinosaur takes us on a journey into the world of dinosaurs.
Obviously, we live in a world where dinosaurs do not exist but The Good Dinosaur imagines a world where the dinosaurs were lucky and did not go extinct from the meteor that hit Earth. The movie follows a relatively young Apatosaurus named Arlo with wide eyes and a goofy smile. Apatosaurus means “deceptive lizard” and is also an herbivore. Therefore, he only eats vegetables and not meat. Let’s just say, he is not your typical dinosaur.
Unlike the dinosaurs we think of, Arlo is easily frightened. After being separated from his family, he ventures out onto his own journey where he ends up meeting a human named Spot who later becomes his friend. Arlo and his new human friend travel through a harsh and mysterious landscape during which Arlo confronts his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.
One of the key features of the movie is that it is the first film from Disney-Pixar to use photorealistic environments or basing the terrains/scenes from real world environments to give a true sense of feeling and space.
With the other well known dinosaur film, Jurassic Park and it’s most recent installment in the franchise released earlier this year, Jurassic World, we tend to have our perception of dinosaurs to be a not so good one. Dinosaurs are often perceived to be big, ugly, mean, vicious creatures that are always chasing down humans. It will be interesting to see how The Good Dinosaur plays out in comparison to the box office topping Jurassic Park series.
With this idea of dinosaurs being mean, scary and vicious, The Good Dinosaur, is all about, well just like the title of the movie says, the good dinosaur. We get to see a different side to the story and it’s quite the cute one. The film follows not only the journey of a dinosaur and a human but also their relationship.
To make things even more exciting, Disney-Pixar has released a new trailer for the movie and in it we get to see how Arlo and the little caveman human interact with one another while exploring the environment around them. Although they don’t and can’t speak to another, their body language says it all. This type of dialogue-free technique is similar to that seen in Wall-E.
One of the most important aspects of films and movie, particularly ones targeted towards children, is to send a specific message about life/morality. The main message from this film is “A single kindness can change everything.”
The Good Dinosaur premieres in theatres on Thanksgiving Day (November 25, 2015). Be sure to check it out the trailer by watching it in the video below!
