Doctor Who Returning in September for Season 9

Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald seem to be presenting a united front for Season 9 of Doctor Who.

The newest trailer for the upcoming season shows them supporting each other and also there are dragons, Zygons, and all sorts of aliens. Oh! And Missy and Maisie Williams’s mystery guest role. It’s all rather exciting—as traveling with the Doctor and his TARDIS should be.  It certainly looks like Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is mellowing into a more classic take on the character, and looks to be having a lot more fun these days with his TARDIS companion Clara Oswald.  Which is a big turn around from Season 8’s more dour and emotional roller coaster.  The storyline was a bit weak for Season 8 and seemed to meander quite a bit before getting to the real meat of the season.

Already there has been much hype about this upcoming season given some of the guest roles and fan theories about who the guest roles might be.  After all, the Doctor has yet to find Gallifrey—something that’s definitely been on his mind this past season, especially after Missy (Michelle Gomez, a.k.a. The Master) toyed with his emotional heartstrings claiming that she’d found it.  The trailer itself may have clues hinting to where the season is going, although, it doesn’t offer much.  We do know there will be more two parter episodes this season, meaning some episodes will likely leave off at a cliffhanger end.  There is confirmation that some old villains and monsters will be back, but that we might getting introduced to some new monsters and maybe new friends.

The trailer opens with The Doctor bursting his way through the TARDIS doors, apologizing for being late—and in the brief shot of him you can just make out that he’s wearing yet another new variant on his look: a red velvet jacket with a clean white dress shirt. Between that and slightly wilder hair style, Twelve is starting to look awfully familiar to a certain past Doctor.  As we pull out to a wider shot of the TARDIS, we can see that the console room has gone through a very minor design update—specifically, the lower halves of the walls now have lit-up roundels in each hexagonal slot. TARDIS roundels are a hallmark of the classic series console room designs, but you might know them as “the round things” from their humorous little cameo in “The Day of the Doctor.”

Yes, the Zygons are back! They’re even bringing the dearly departed Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) with them in a two-part episode. The Comic-Con trailer had a shot of Zygon kidnapping a young child, so they’re up to no good following their seemingly peaceful reconciliation with UNIT back in “The Day of the Doctor.”  Along with the Missy and the Daleks, the Doctor will have a lot to contend with this season.  And how certain monsters are back after their seemingly destruction will likely be touched upon.

The first trailer already showed Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor playing guitar at a rock concert, but in this second one he also rides a horse, jumps out a window, and, of course, does a lot of running with his loyal companion Clara.  “… just The Doctor and Clara Oswald, in the TARDIS!” Our two heroes fly off into time and space, as the tagline “born to save the universe” blazes across the screen  Doctor Who returns Sept. 19,. Check out the trailer below and weigh in on your excitement.
