As someone who is admittedly an absolute movie addict, it is disappointing to hear that Walt Disney Pictures will not be moving forward with film production for it’s new movie and sequel: Tron 3.
The news of the upcoming movie dates as far back as 2012. Earlier this year, there were reports that the movie would starting filming soon in Vancouver, Canada. Now, the movie project is no longer in effect. At this point, it is hard to believe that there still may be a chance for the movie.
The original Tron movie premiered in 1982 and starred Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner. The sequel, Tron: Legacy, directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund, was released back in December 2010.
The sequel follows the son of a virtual world designer, Sam Flynn, who goes looking for his father, Kevin Flynn played by Jeff Bridges. Sam ends up inside the digital world his father designed where he meets his father’s corrupted creation and encounters a unique ally who was born inside the digital world. While it sounds so simple, Sam finds himself having to face many obstacles before he is able to reunite with his father. This created for much of the suspense and action throughout the film.
When the film hit theaters, it made $170 million in the U.S. box office. The film totaled $400 million in the global box office. Despite racking up a good amount of that green stuff, it seems like Disney feels it didn’t do as well domestically as they would have liked to and fear that it may happen again.
For example, Disney recently released their latest sci-fi film over this past Memorial Day weekend called Tomorrowland. The cost of production came to $180 million and it only grossed $42.7 million over the four-day holiday weekend. Ouch. I guess Disney is just better off sticking to their classics.
However, If Disney were to release the film, I would definitely be seeing the movie. I really enjoyed watching the movie when it first came out. Sometimes, it plays on regular TV and it is a movie I would watch again.
The movie was futuristic and the sci-fi feel to it was intriguing. It is the thrill of something unreal becoming real in front of our eyes. In addition, as a gamer myself, the storyline of a digital world is fascinating.
It really is a shame that Disney came to that decision. Although many fans of the film, like myself, may be upset to not see the movie not come to theaters, the film industry is still a business and a business will run like a business and do whatever is best for that business and that will bring nothing by profit – even if it means stopping production on a movie. Although I may disagree with Disney’s decision, I respect their decision as well.
The big boys at Walt Disney run the show so I just hope to see some more amazing movies coming from them in the near future.
