Universal Pictures have officially announced that Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will write and produce the live-action adaptation of Mattel’s Monster High characters. The film will be set at the titular Monster High and will feature he spawn of famous monsters including Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman undergoing the trials and tribulations of high school.

The Monster High character and tranche were created by Mattel in July, 2010. The characters are inspired by monster movies, sci-fi horror, thriller fiction, and various demons therefore distinguishing them from most fashion dolls. They were created by Garrett Sander, with illustrations by Kellee Riley.

The characters have previously been adapted into various TV specials, a web series, a direct to DVD movie, and software. Lisi Harrison is the author of the Monster High books. The characters are depicted as being either related to or as offspring of famous monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, Medusa, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Phantom of the Opera, and zombies or others that are undead, and more. The characters are usually referred to as ghouls.

Schwartz and Savage will produce under their Fake Empire banner alongside Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. Mattel’s Playground Productions is executive producing. Universal’s vice president of production Maradith Frenkel and creative executive Chloe Yellin will oversee the project for the studio.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar had previously written the movie as a musical, but the plans no longer have the film going in that direction.
