There are very few things that I enjoy more than a good 1960’s surfer rock musical (and time travel!) Disney’s newest release, Teen Beach Movie, fulfills that love while also being a fantastic film for children and teens. Between the actors that Disney fans already love, good music, and a fun storyline, Teen Beach Movie is a great movie for the summer even if you are back in school already!
In Teen Beach Movie we are introduced to the confident and resilient surfer, McKenzie and her carefree boyfriend, Brady. Both are fans of the classic film “West Side Story.” On the morning of her planned departure for boarding school, she and Brady catch one last epic wave which mysteriously carries them right into “West Side Story.” In 1962, the pair meet Seacat, Giggles, Rascal, and CheeChee, among others. Amidst the spontaneous song and dance, there is trouble in paradise. It’s a bikers versus surfers turf war attempting to gain control of a local hangout. Mack and Brady are unwilling to interfere with the star-crossed lovers of a surfer and biker in love. Typical of the teen beach movie genre, a kooky subplot has mad scientists scheming to alter weather patters and take over the hangout and then the world.
Both the time travel aspect and the surfer rock atmosphere mix perfectly. They blend together to create a world that most viewers probably are not familiar with: the 1960’s. Teen Beach Movie is able to present the music, style, and life of a bygone era in a fun and captivating way. (Listen to the Ventures fans of the movie, trust me!) The original musical numbers are also fantastic. They are fun and addicting. You will be singing them in your head for hours. Not to mention its similarity to “West Side Story” will be a treat for any adult watching as well.
Most Disney fans will recognize a few familiar faces when watching the movie. It stars Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell, Garrett Clayton, Grace Phipps, John Deluca, Chrissie Fit, Barry Bostwick, Kevin Chamberlin, and Steve Valentine. All the actors in Teen Beach Movie, perfectly capture their roles. Lynch plays Brady and is able to leave his “Austin & Ally” role behind for something completely brand new. You might recognize Mitchell from the hit show, “The Fosters.” But in this movie she plays the incredible role model surfer girl, McKenzie.
Summer might have come and gone but you can keep enjoying the tunes and atmosphere with Teen Beach Movie.
