WHEN MILES GOT MAD
We love how the characters are drawn on real backgrounds, helping the children really relate to them. Miles and Max, two brothers, come across a problem that we have seen in our house as well. What happens when your younger brother breaks something by mistake? The book teaches Miles about his emotions and how to stay calm instead of getting so mad. A great lesson being taught and the way that the emotion of “mad” is portrayed in the book works for the kids. What I really enjoyed about it is having the 9-year-old read it to the 7 and 3 year old which allows everyone in the family to share in the message that the book has to tell. This is a book that every parent should own, and every child should read.
SALLY SIMON SIMMONS’ SUPER FRUSTRATING DAY
So maybe your child does not get mad often, but they do get frustrated, well Sally is here to teach your child about their emotions. Sally’s story involves her trying to build the tallest sandwich, as told in rhyme by the author. Besides teaching children to not become frustrated, they are also told about how practice can help you become better at things. Overall, two very good messages told and illustrated in a fun story that the kids will enjoy. By making the initial frustration about a school project, I think it really made it work for most children. Chilren, even the younger ones will have older siblings or relative where they can relate to school (pre-school) work.
Ruby’s Studio: The Friendship Show on DVD and for download (for ages 2-6)
After watching this with my younger child, who loved it by the way, we realized that there are products out there that can give a message and do it in a way that both children and parents can appreciate. Ruby does not need any gimmick or costume to spread the message of fun and friendship, but can rely on her natural charisma, animated sections, art and music to keep her audience entertained. The Pop-Up Parenting feature helps you to start your interaction with your kids by putting up questions on the screen when the video is running so that a parent can watch and ask those same questions to their children. Learning about Friendship is very important for children and this video is a great way to introduce it to them and let them have a better understanding of what it means.
MY FEELINGS ACTIVITY BOOK
What a great book and while I thought originally it might be a bit old for my shy 9-year-old, it helped me learn a lot about him. The beginning of the book has your child filling in information about themselves and then it is followed by activities where your child can help you understand how they feel. Each type of emotion also has a section where your children can draw how they feel as well. A great way to start off doing some interactions with your children learning how they feel.
The Mother Company really helps both parents and children delve into very serious social and emotional learning issues in a fun and relatable way. I wish I had these books and videos for my older children, but I think they can still be helpful to them now, especially as they relate to their younger siblings. These should be mandatory reading (and watching) for all parents and children growing up.
