The New Music Feature is just what it sounds like. A showcase for new music and new artists as they begin climbing the charts or making a name for themselves in the music industry.

This week, we have Kayla Brianna, a talented R&B singer with a fusion of classic pop, R&B and jazz.

Kayla is Interscope Records’ lastest signee who recently premiered her video for “If You Love Me.” The video for her single was released during the halftime of a recent Lakers VS Heat game. She has already gotten the support of several high profile celebrities such as Keri Hilson, George Lopez, Chris Rock, Ice Cube, and Kobe Bryant fans. The stars have been tweeting their support for months now, and “If You Love Me” was even a trending topic on Twitter after the video’s release.

About Kayla:

BSCkids recently sat down with Kayla and asked her about her music and her burgeoning career. The talented young singer’s sound is inspired by influences like Brandy and Aaliyah. Kayla, the daughter of basketball legend and NBA commentator Kenny Smith, hopes that her music will speak to young girls around the world who are transitioning to adulthood.

What was the turning point that made you realize you wanted to be a star?

Watching award shows, and performances from: Destinys Child, Aaliyah, Mary J. Blige and hearing songs on the radio made me want to imitate what I saw and heard. I was deeply inspired and realized thatit was something I wanted to do.

Have your parents always been supportive about your music career?

My parents have definitely been my backbone through this whole process.

What is the hardest part about being in the studio and going to school at the same time?

The hardest part is that I lose a lot of sleep. Certain days I can be in the studio til 2am and then have to wake up and go to school at 6 the next morning.

What inspired you to write the song, “If You Love Me”?

The remake of Brownstone’s “If You Love Me” is such a universal anthem that everyone can relate to. I think its important that my audience hears personable, relatable music from me!

How did it feel to have so many high profile celebrities tweeting their support for your song, “If You Love Me”?

It’s very encouraging to know that people I admire are supportive of my career. I’m so thankful to have support from my friends and family as well.

Do you have any plans to release a debut album soon?

YES! More music will be out by this year summer and the album should out this summer.

Do you know what your next single will be?

It’s in the works, but i’ve been working hard in the studio and can’t wait to release new material with some features from other artists out right now!

What music artist would you love to work with the most?

I would say Frank Ocean because he’s such an amazing lyricist and I would love to learn from him, he’s so dope!

Do you have a specific message you wish to impart on your fans through your music?

My music is personable and relatable. My album has a song for every occasion which makes it good to listen to if your partying, in love, going through heartbreak…or all three!

Any advice for younger people who want to also be in the music industry?

I always say follow your heart… it sounds cliche, but it’s so true! When you’re doing what you love, you can’t let anything get in the way of your dreams.
