Gotta go fast!
But this time, Sonic the Hedgehog is racing toward an entirely new generation of fans.
Sega and Netflix are teaming up once again to bring the famous blue blur back to animated television with an all-new Sonic the Hedgehog series currently in development.
And while Sonic has certainly had no shortage of adventures across games, movies and television over the years, this newest outing is taking the character somewhere a little different.
Straight toward younger viewers.
The new animated series will feature Sonic and his friends as heroes in a story created specifically for an upper preschool audience. But don’t expect the fastest hedgehog around to suddenly lose that trademark attitude along the way.
Sega describes the project as a high-energy comedy with plenty of heart, while still giving younger fans a little edge, a little attitude and that feeling of wanting to be part of Sonic’s crew.
Honestly, that sounds pretty fitting for Sonic.
While the franchise has certainly grown alongside longtime fans, Sonic has always held plenty of appeal for kids. He’s colorful, incredibly fast, surrounded by a memorable group of friends and constantly racing off toward another adventure.
And introducing those characters through a series created specifically with younger viewers in mind gives Sega another opportunity to bring a new generation into Sonic’s ever-expanding world.
Perhaps even more interesting is the emphasis on Sonic and his friends as a team.
Between Tails, Knuckles, Amy and the many other characters who have become part of Sonic’s world over the decades, there is certainly no shortage of personalities to build that sense of friendship and adventure around.
The project will also continue Sega’s relationship with Netflix, where all three seasons of Sonic Prime are currently available to stream. The new series is being developed with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara.
It comes as part of a larger new agreement between Netflix and Sega that will also bring Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven to the screen.
For now, additional details surrounding Sonic’s newest animated adventure — including exactly which familiar friends will be joining him — remain under wraps.
But one thing seems pretty certain.
Sonic isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
And soon, a whole new generation of kids may be racing right alongside him.
