From Under the Sea to At Sea! “The SpongeBob Musical” Is Coming to Royal Caribbean

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Well, apparently SpongeBob is going to have to pack that pineapple because, for the first time, “The SpongeBob Musical” is heading out to sea.

Royal Caribbean is bringing Bikini Bottom aboard its upcoming “Hero of the Seas” with the first-ever at-sea production inspired by the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical and Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series. The new production will debut when the family-focused ship begins sailing from Miami in August 2027.

And really, taking SpongeBob out into the middle of the ocean feels almost too perfect.

“The SpongeBob Musical” will take over the Royal Theater aboard “Hero of the Seas,” transforming the familiar world of Bikini Bottom into a new production created specifically for Royal Caribbean. Inspired by both the Broadway show and the animated series, the reimagined musical is being designed as an experience the whole family can enjoy together.

For families who already know the story, the stakes are considerably bigger than deciding who gets the next Krabby Patty.

SpongeBob and his friends find Bikini Bottom facing total destruction and must race against time to save their home. Along the way, the story packs in larger-than-life characters, music, plenty of unexpected turns and a message about friendship—and about how heroes can sometimes come from the places we least expect.

The original Broadway production earned 12 Tony Award nominations, but bringing the musical aboard “Hero of the Seas” gives families an entirely different way to experience SpongeBob’s theatrical world.

Instead of heading home when the curtain closes, they’re still on a ship in the middle of the ocean.

Royal Caribbean says the production is part of its larger focus on entertainment capable of bringing different generations together, and SpongeBob certainly has the history to make that possible. For kids, Bikini Bottom remains a colorful, ridiculous world filled with familiar characters and adventures. For the parents who grew up alongside SpongeBob themselves, watching those characters take the stage with their own children adds another layer to the experience.

And “The SpongeBob Musical” is only one part of what Royal Caribbean is building for families aboard its fourth Icon Class ship.

“Hero of the Seas” will feature eight neighborhoods filled with experiences ranging from Crown’s Edge—a combination skywalk and zip line suspended 154 feet above the ocean—to Category 6, billed as the largest waterpark at sea. There will also be nine pools and 28 dining venues, alongside hands-on cooking classes and other experiences.

Even the accommodations are getting a rather massive family upgrade.

The ship will introduce the three-deck Ultimate Family Treehouse, complete with a rooftop terrace, whirlpool and a two-deck space designed for teens. Taken together with the waterpark, pools, entertainment and other activities, “Hero of the Seas” is being built around the idea that different members of a family can find something meant for them.

But we’re still stuck on SpongeBob.

There is something wonderfully fitting about a character who has spent his entire life under the sea becoming part of a family vacation happening directly above it. It also continues to show just how far Bikini Bottom can travel beyond television, giving families another way to physically step into a world kids have been watching for generations.

“Hero of the Seas” will begin sailing seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean vacations from Miami in August 2027, with each itinerary visiting Perfect Day CocoCay in The Bahamas. Depending on the sailing, additional destinations will include Cozumel, Roatan, St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

So pack the swimsuits.

Grab the sunscreen.

And maybe bring a spatula just in case.

Because in 2027, SpongeBob is going from under the sea to at sea—and Bikini Bottom is coming along for the ride.
