Barry Loser Is Heading to Animation! Beloved Children’s Book Series Gets a New Television Adaptation

There is no question that children’s literature has been the foundation for some of the most beloved animated series of all time. From the imaginative worlds that have captivated generations of readers to the extraordinary characters whose adventures have continued far beyond the pages of their original stories, there is something particularly special about seeing a literary favorite brought to life through animation. And now, another popular children’s book franchise is preparing to make that leap!

The award-winning British children’s book series Barry Loser, created by author and illustrator Jim Smith, is officially being developed into an animated television series through a partnership between Big Little Fish Television and Italian production company Frog Head.

The upcoming adaptation, which has already been picked up by ITVX Kids in the United Kingdom, will consist of 52 eleven-minute episodes following the wonderfully unusual adventures of Barry Loser, a 10-year-old boy whose extraordinary imagination has a rather remarkable ability to transform even the most ordinary experiences into something completely unexpected.

Set in the fictional British town of Mogden, the series will bring audiences into Barry’s world, where everything from a simple trip to the store to visiting his grandmother can become an elaborate adventure. And with the creative team planning to preserve the books’ distinctive illustrations through a loose, hand-drawn 2D animation style, there’s certainly plenty of potential to capture the humor and imaginative charm that have made the original stories so popular.

Since its introduction, Barry Loser has grown into a bestselling literary franchise spanning 11 books and graphic novels, selling more than one million copies worldwide and reaching readers in 17 languages. The series has also received the prestigious Roald Dahl Funny Prize, further establishing its place among contemporary children’s literary favorites.

Bringing the project to life will be Big Little Fish Television alongside Frog Head, with Florence-based DogHead Animation, part of Banijay Kids & Family, handling the animation.

While the adaptation is still in development, the production team is preparing to introduce the project to potential partners during Rome’s MIA Market, taking place October 19–23. With approximately 60–70% of its financing already secured, producers are hoping to finalize the remaining funding during the first quarter of 2027, allowing animation production to begin shortly afterward.

And for longtime readers who have followed Barry’s rather unconventional adventures over the years, the prospect of seeing his imaginative world brought to life through animation is certainly an exciting development.

With its distinctive sense of humor, familiar childhood experiences and a protagonist whose imagination knows very few boundaries, Barry Loser could be a delightful addition to the growing collection of children’s literary adaptations making their way to television.
