The world of “Monster High” is expanding once again.
And this newest collaboration feels somewhat overdue.
For the first time ever, two of Mattel’s most recognizable doll brands are crossing paths as “Monster High” officially enters the world of American Girl.
Leading the charge?
Frankie Stein, naturally.
American Girl and Monster High have teamed up to create the limited-edition Monster High Frankie Stein Doll by American Girl, transforming the electrifying ghoul into an 18-inch American Girl collector doll.
It marks the first collaboration between the two Mattel brands and gives Frankie a rather dramatic growth spurt in the process.
While Monster High and American Girl might occupy very different corners of the doll aisle, there has always been some surprising connective tissue between them.
American Girl has spent decades using dolls and storytelling to encourage confidence, courage and individuality among generations of girls.
Monster High arrived in 2010 with a considerably more monstrous spin on some of those same ideas, building an entire franchise around embracing what makes you different and encouraging fans to be themselves.
Two very different schools of doll storytelling.
Yet perhaps not so different after all.
Now those worlds are finally colliding.
Frankie’s new American Girl interpretation keeps many of the elements that have made the character instantly recognizable for more than a decade.
The 18-inch doll features Frankie’s signature streaked hair alongside a blue-and-black plaid dress with sparkly mesh details, layered chains and a lightning bolt belt.
Her look is completed with platform Mary Janes and a quilted skullette purse, bringing plenty of familiar Monster High attitude into the traditionally larger American Girl format.
The limited-edition doll will also arrive inside specially designed blue-and-black packaging created for the collaboration.
At $225, this Frankie is very clearly being aimed toward collectors of both brands rather than serving as another standard Monster High release.
And that is perhaps where this crossover becomes especially interesting.
Monster High has become increasingly comfortable moving beyond the traditional fashion doll format that first introduced fans to Draculaura, Clawdeen, Frankie and the rest of the student body.
The franchise has grown across entertainment, fashion, collectibles and increasingly ambitious collaborations, allowing its characters and unmistakable visual identity to exist far beyond the halls of Monster High itself.
American Girl gives that expansion another completely different direction.
Instead of simply putting an American Girl character into Monster High-inspired clothing, Mattel has taken one of Monster High’s most recognizable ghouls and rebuilt her through the design language and craftsmanship associated with American Girl.
It is Frankie Stein.
Just considerably taller.
More importantly, this first collaboration brings together two brands that have spent years telling young fans that what makes them different is also what makes them special.
One just happens to deliver that message with a few more fangs, bolts and platform shoes.
The limited-edition Monster High Frankie Stein Doll by American Girl will be available beginning August 31 for Berry Rewards Members before becoming available to all fans September 1.
And now that the doors between American Girl and Monster High have officially opened, there is really only one question left.
