There is something magical about hearing the songs that helped define our childhoods.
But hearing them performed by the voices that brought generations of Disney Princesses to life? That is something entirely different.
Disney officially kicked off its World Princess Week celebrations in truly royal fashion with Disney Princess: The Ultimate Concert Celebration, bringing together the largest gathering of Disney Princess talent ever assembled for one unforgettable night at Disney California Adventure Park.
And when Disney says ultimate, they certainly mean it.
Held as part of D23 Day at Disneyland Resort, the musical celebration brought together performers spanning decades of Disney history — from the voices behind the animated classics and Broadway productions to the stars introducing these characters to entirely new generations through Disney’s live-action films.
It created something rather special: Disney Princess history meeting its present, all on the same stage.
The evening opened with Brandy, who starred as Cinderella in 1997’s beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, performing the timeless “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”
From there, Disney continued bringing generations together.
Disney Legend Paige O’Hara, the original voice of Belle in 1991’s Beauty and the Beast, joined incoming Disney Legend Susan Egan, Broadway’s original Belle, for “Belle Reprise” and “Something There.”
Then came a pairing that brought two generations of Ariel together.
Disney Legend Jodi Benson and Halle Bailey united for “Part of Your World,” connecting the voice of Ariel from Disney’s 1989 animated classic with the actress who brought the character into live action in 2023.
The same passing of Disney magic continued with Moana.
Auli’i Cravalho performed “How Far I’ll Go” before being joined by Catherine Laga’aia, Disney’s new live-action Moana, for “Along the Way.” It was another rare opportunity to see two generations of the same heroine sharing a stage rather than existing separately across their respective films.
And Disney was far from finished.
Disney Legend Lea Salonga, the original singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan, joined Brandy for “A Whole New World” before returning to one of her most beloved Disney performances with “Reflection.”
Judy Kuhn brought Pocahontas back into the celebration with “Colors of the Wind,” while Disney Legend Anika Noni Rose returned to Tiana’s journey with “Almost There.”
All of it unfolded alongside projections from the corresponding Disney films across a cascading wall of water, surrounded by lighting and fountains that transformed the concert into something much larger than simply watching these songs performed onstage.
Because these aren’t simply Disney songs anymore.
For generations of fans, they are pieces of childhood.
Some audiences first heard Jodi Benson dream of exploring the world above the sea. Others grew up alongside Brandy’s Cinderella, Anika Noni Rose’s Tiana or Auli’i Cravalho’s Moana. And today’s children are now discovering many of those same characters through new films, shows, books, toys and experiences of their own.
That generational connection was ultimately at the heart of the night.
The entire cast came together to close the celebration with “When You Wish Upon a Star,” bringing decades of Disney voices onto one stage and offering a fitting reminder of just how far these stories have traveled.
It is also a powerful way to begin World Princess Week.
Disney Princess has grown far beyond a collection of animated films into one of Disney’s most enduring global franchises. Yet beneath all of the merchandise, attractions and new interpretations are the stories and songs that made audiences fall in love with these characters in the first place.
Disney Princess: The Ultimate Concert Celebration brought that history together for one night — allowing the women who helped create that magic to share it with one another and with the generations who followed them.
And thankfully, you didn’t have to be at Disneyland to experience it.
Fans around the world will be able to stream Disney Princess: The Ultimate Concert Celebration on Disney+ and watch the special across Disney Channel, Freeform and The Wonderful World of Disney on ABC on August 16.
After all, Disney magic doesn’t disappear when childhood ends.
Sometimes, you just need the right song to bring it all rushing back.
