“Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory” Gets Major Cast Expansion — And Netflix Is Taking Wonka Back to Theaters

Get ready for another trip into the wonderfully strange world of Willy Wonka.

The world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is getting ready for its next major reinvention, and Netflix has just given fans their biggest taste yet of what is waiting behind those factory doors.

Not only has Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory added some major names to its already impressive voice cast, but Netflix Animation Studios has confirmed the animated feature is getting a wide global theatrical release before making its way home to streaming.

And this isn’t simply another retelling of the story generations of fans already know.

Instead, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is taking the familiar world created by Roald Dahl and pushing it forward with a new Charlie, a new generation of kids and a rather unusual continuation of Willy Wonka’s story.

Set in modern-day London, the film stars Heartstopper‘s Kit Connor as Charlie Paley, a brand-new character who finds himself going head-to-head with one of literature’s most famous candy makers.

And stepping into the rather eccentric shoes of Willy Wonka is Taika Waititi.

But those two are far from alone.

Netflix has now revealed that Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter are joining the film’s voice cast.

That’s quite the guest list for a trip to the chocolate factory.

This time around, however, Wonka hasn’t exactly been spending his years quietly inventing new candy.

Following the events of the infamous Golden Ticket contest, Wonka has spent years behind bars for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Once released, he returns to his factory determined to bring a little sweetness back into the world.

Standing in his way is Charlie Paley and his group of friends.

Facing eviction from their homes, the teenagers hatch a plan to break into Wonka’s factory and steal a priceless Wonka Bar that could offer them a way out.

Of course, breaking into Willy Wonka’s factory is never going to be quite that simple.

The new story offers an interesting way of returning to such an established world without simply recreating the adventures of Charlie Bucket. Instead, Netflix is using the history audiences already know as the foundation for something new, introducing another generation of children while exploring what might have happened after those famous factory doors originally closed.

Animation is also opening those doors much wider.

Directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory promises original songs, new characters, familiar faces and a considerably more unhinged trip through Wonka’s world than audiences may be expecting.

But perhaps the biggest news surrounding the project is where audiences will actually get to see it.

Rather than heading directly to streaming, Netflix Animation Studios is sending Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory into theaters worldwide on November 5, 2027, with Sony Pictures Entertainment handling international theatrical distribution.

The film will then make its Netflix debut on December 22, 2027.

That gives the animated feature a substantial theatrical window of nearly seven weeks before arriving on the platform — making this feel much more like a major theatrical family event than simply another streaming release.

And Netflix isn’t stopping with the movie.

Since acquiring the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021, the streamer has continued looking for ways to expand these familiar stories into something much larger. Reality competition The Golden Ticket is arriving in 2026, while the new animated film is already being supported by a growing consumer-products program.

Ferrero Group is preparing 10 Wonka-inspired seasonal and limited-edition products across chocolate, candy, ice cream and cereal beginning this fall in the U.S. and select European markets. Moose Toys has also been named master toy partner, with its Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory collection set to arrive closer to the movie’s 2027 debut.

Between a major theatrical rollout, an increasingly stacked cast, original music, new characters, toys and even real-world sweets, Netflix appears ready to make its return to the chocolate factory much bigger than a single movie.

The factory doors officially reopen when Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory arrives in theaters November 5, 2027, before streaming on Netflix December 22.
