The WOOHP trio are ready for anything—including a music video.
Weeks ago, “Totally Spies”—the recently returned animated action spy series from the early 2000s—surprised fans with the release of a brand-new single, “Run This Town.”
This upbeat track quickly became a catchy addition to fans’ playlists as it perfectly embodied not only the recently concluded seventh season, but also the franchise as a whole as it now celebrates its 25th anniversary.
However, while the song itself created plenty of excitement, there was also a great deal of speculation surrounding the elusive spy trio. Social media teasers showcased all-new animation of Sam, Clover, and Alex dancing and singing along to the new track, leaving fans wondering whether the footage was part of a larger unannounced project or simply created to help promote the song’s release.
Turns out, the answer was somewhere in the middle.
In an unexpected, yet perfectly fitting move, fans got their answer with the release of the first fully animated music video from “Totally Spies.”
If there was ever a way to pay music video homage to an animated series, this would be it.
“Totally Spies” is, by nature, a very clear product of everything that made 2000s girl-focused media so memorable. Friendship, fashion, a little romance, and naturally… girl power.
This music video feels like a wonderful celebration of everything that has always made the series unique.
During Season Seven, we saw the girls leave California and establish themselves in Singapore with a new school and a new WOOHP operations base, while also welcoming new faces into their ever-growing circle. All of those elements, along with plenty of new fashion—very much a Clover specialty—make appearances throughout this short video.
But longtime fans are also treated to something especially nostalgic.
Callbacks to earlier chapters of the franchise.
Clips featuring younger versions of the girls appear throughout the video, complete with their original 2000s animation style.
While you can clearly see the differences in both the animation and the technology, it creates a wonderful looking-glass effect where the past meets the present while looking toward the future.
One that looks incredibly bright for Sam, Alex, Clover, and the rest of the team as they prepare for their next globe-trotting spy mission.
Only after celebrating their 25th anniversary in style, of course.
