“The Last Kids On Earth” Returns In Live Action As Kids’ Sci-Fi Continues Its Big Moment

From alien invasions and monster-filled adventures to magical worlds and futuristic heroes, science fiction is continuing to carve out an exciting place in children’s entertainment.

Now, one of the genre’s most beloved recent franchises is preparing for its next evolution.

Disney+ and Disney Channel have officially handed a pilot order to a live-action adaptation of The Last Kids On Earth, bringing Max Brallier’s bestselling book series—and the hit animated adaptation—to an entirely new generation of viewers.

Written by Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux, with Kevin Tancharoen set to direct, the series follows a mismatched group of teenagers after monsters overrun their hometown of Wakefield. As the world descends into chaos, the unlikely friends must work together to survive while discovering they may be humanity’s greatest hope for stopping the apocalypse.

The project marks another chapter for a franchise that has already found success across multiple mediums. Following the popularity of Brallier’s bestselling books, The Last Kids On Earth made the jump to animation with a Netflix special in 2019 before continuing with two additional seasons that blended monster-filled action, comedy and heartfelt friendships into one unforgettable adventure.

Should the pilot move forward to series, the live-action adaptation offers an opportunity to bring the franchise’s imaginative creatures, larger-than-life action and post-apocalyptic world into an entirely new format while introducing Jack Sullivan and his friends to a new audience.

The announcement also comes as children’s science fiction continues gaining momentum across television and streaming. In recent years, studios have increasingly embraced stories that combine thrilling adventures with imaginative worlds, proving that younger audiences have a growing appetite for stories that explore the unknown while remaining rooted in friendship, teamwork and hope.

That is exactly what has helped make The Last Kids On Earth resonate with readers and viewers alike. Beneath the monsters, zombies and end-of-the-world stakes is a story about finding your family, believing in one another and discovering that even ordinary kids can become extraordinary heroes.

While the project is currently in the pilot stage, the possibility of seeing The Last Kids On Earth leap from page to animation—and now potentially into live action—marks another exciting milestone for one of children’s most popular modern adventure franchises.
