One of the most exciting parts of today’s animation landscape is discovering stories from every corner of the globe.
From magical adventures and holiday tales to journeys of courage and self-discovery, family animation continues to prove that great storytelling knows no borders.
That trend was on full display at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival as French animation company Dandelooo Cinéma unveiled new additions to its growing lineup of family-focused feature films.
Leading the announcement is Pikkuli and Starlight Reindeer, a brand-new animated adventure based on the popular preschool series that has already found audiences in more than 40 territories worldwide.
Produced by Finnish studios AittoFlow and Filmkompaniet, the 80-minute feature follows the determined young bird Pikkuli as he embarks on a snowy adventure to save Christmas.
Set in the peaceful Sunny Moor Woods, the story begins when the magical Starlight Reindeer—who traditionally brings gifts and joy to children—suddenly disappears and the magical star guiding the celebration begins to fade. When the adults decide Christmas must be canceled, Pikkuli refuses to give up hope.
Joined by friends, the brave little bird sets off across icy landscapes in search of the legendary reindeer, discovering along the way that courage, friendship and togetherness may be the greatest gifts of all.
The film is currently in production and is scheduled to arrive in Finnish theaters this October, with a French theatrical release planned for Christmas 2027.
For families who enjoy heartfelt holiday adventures filled with warmth and optimism, Pikkuli and Starlight Reindeer appears poised to become a charming new seasonal favorite.
The acquisition continues Dandelooo Cinéma’s growing focus on bringing internationally produced family stories to wider audiences.
Another recent addition to the company’s slate is Acorn’s Adventure, an original 3D animated feature from Czech studio Pure Shore and Germany’s Fabian&Fred. Currently targeted for release in 2028, the project further expands the company’s commitment to family-friendly storytelling from across Europe.
Meanwhile, another major title is already beginning to build momentum.
Born in the Jungle is set to make its worldwide premiere at Annecy while also securing a growing list of distribution partners across Europe.
Inspired by the work of award-winning Latvian author Luīze Pastore and the real-life adventures of explorer Aleksander Laime, the film transports audiences to 1950s Venezuela.
The story follows nine-year-old Elizabeth, whose summer vacation takes an unexpected turn when her younger brother Leo vanishes into the jungle. Forced to exchange the comfort of books for real-world adventure, Elizabeth embarks on a daring mission not only to rescue her brother but also to save a mysterious furry creature and return it to the legendary Tepui mountains.
Targeted toward children ages five through eight and family audiences, the film combines adventure, exploration and emotional storytelling against the backdrop of one of the world’s most breathtaking natural environments.
Together, Pikkuli and Starlight Reindeer, Born in the Jungle and Acorn’s Adventure highlight a growing reality within modern animation.
Some of the most exciting family films currently in development are coming from creators around the world.
As audiences continue to embrace stories regardless of where they originate, projects like these demonstrate how rich, diverse and imaginative the future of family animation has become.
