I feel like every single time I start an article about our favorite team of Parisian heroes, I always end up mentioning just what a year it has been, thanks to the talented team over at Miraculous Corp. If anything, I feel like that statement only grows stronger each time we talk about the one and only Miraculous.
This year alone has been massive for the global hit animated series, and as we head into the highly anticipated seventh season (no, there is absolutely no way to mentally prepare), Miraculous Corp has once more left us awestruck with another game-changing announcement.
Over the years, there has been some chatter about this happening. But now it’s real, confirmed, and at the starting line for the newest adaptation of the story of Ladybug and Cat Noir. We’ve seen them animated on the big screen, and now fans will get to experience their story in an all-new live-action television series, being co-developed and co-produced by Miraculous Corp and See-Saw Films.
If the name See-Saw Films sounds familiar, it should. They’re the ones behind many recent hits, including the YA smash hit Heartstopper, as well as the acclaimed series Slow Horses. That production background alone already sets the stage for what this yet-to-be-fully-detailed Miraculous project could become.
Over the past ten years, we have followed the animated adventures of Marinette and Adrien as they live somewhat normal lives that just happen to include being heroes. For this new series, the creative team isn’t recreating the wheel, just changing up the steering, as this adaptation is already intended to appeal to older audiences. Both those who have grown up watching Ladybug mature into the great hero she is today and new fans who love more YA-centric narratives. This not only allows the current animated series to retain its core younger demographic, where Miraculous continues to stand at the top of the charts, but also allows older fans, who make up a staggering portion of the fan community, to see themselves more in these characters they know so well. In fact, according to Miraculous Corp, 82% of the franchise’s adult viewers and 60% of its social media followers fall within the 16–24 age demographic, further highlighting just how much the series has grown alongside its audience.
And naturally, this opens the door for things older fans have wanted to see happen that have yet to come to pass. The new adaptation is already being envisioned as a multi-season story, bringing together the emotional depth of a romance with the scale of an epic superhero adventure, all set against a darker, more romantic interpretation of Paris. Even the writer in me is spinning with ideas and delighted by the potential gold this new door allows for. But I’ll save those thoughts for when we get closer to the actual release.
Not only is this co-production major, but it also has some major talent coming aboard to transform this beloved story for a new audience. Emme Hoy has been tapped to adapt the series, with her writing credits including the thriller Sweetpea, episodes of the upcoming BBC series Honey, and more. We’re getting a fresh set of eyes taking a turn at this incredible world that fans have lived in for so long, and we truly can’t wait to see the story she weaves.
At the time of publication, Hoy’s involvement in the series has been confirmed, but who else will be gaining a Miraculous of their own remains unknown, along with additional details such as a release date. Regardless, this feels like a massive win for Miraculous, one that feels particularly timely given the feats the series has achieved and the impact it continues to have on audiences and pop culture.
What once was a simple concept about two heroes in the City of Love has lit a fire in hearts across the globe. And now that flame will reach even more people.
Are we ready? Of course. Because it’s time to get our claws out!
