There is something truly magical about the moment a child begins to discover the wonders of reading. What once appeared to be a collection of unfamiliar letters slowly transforms into words, sentences and eventually entire stories filled with unforgettable characters, extraordinary adventures and worlds waiting to be explored.
It’s a milestone that opens the door to countless possibilities, allowing children to discover new interests, explore different perspectives and develop skills that will continue shaping their lives long after they’ve learned to read their first book. And while learning those foundational skills can sometimes feel challenging, there’s one familiar group of PBS KIDS heroes who have spent nearly two decades proving that reading can be just as exciting as any superhero adventure.
Because who needs to fly or possess extraordinary strength when you have the power to read?
Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures is bringing a new generation of literacy-powered superhero adventures to PBS KIDS, expanding the beloved educational franchise with 39 half-hour episodes filled with familiar characters, new challenges and plenty of opportunities for young viewers to become heroes themselves.
Produced by 9 Story Media Group and animated by Brown Bag Films, the series builds upon the legacy of the original Super Why! while introducing a colorful comic book-inspired world designed to help preschoolers and kindergarteners develop essential reading skills. And for families who grew up watching the original series, there’s something particularly special about seeing these familiar characters return with new adventures.
First introduced in 2007, Super Why! quickly became a recognizable part of the PBS KIDS lineup, combining imaginative storytelling with an interactive approach to early literacy education. Rather than simply presenting children with letters and words to memorize, the series invited young viewers to participate in adventures where reading was the key to solving problems.
Through phonics, spelling, vocabulary and comprehension, children could help their favorite characters overcome challenges while developing the skills necessary to become confident readers. And nearly twenty years later, that mission remains just as important, particularly as parents and educators continue looking for meaningful ways to encourage children’s literacy development.
With Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures, the familiar approach receives an exciting new setting as the Super Readers protect the colorful world of Reader Valley from an assortment of mischievous villains whose schemes revolve around letters, words and sounds.
Leading the adventures is Power Paige, the newest member of the Super Readers, who joins familiar friends Super Why, Wonder Red, Princess Presto and Alpha Pig. And yes, Alpha Pig is back and ready to build! Together, the heroes use their individual reading powers and gadgets to tackle challenges that require much more than simply defeating a villain. Instead, every problem becomes an opportunity to explore how letters work together, how sounds form words and how understanding language can help change the outcome of a story.
Of course, no superhero adventure would be complete without a few troublesome villains, and Reader Valley has certainly attracted some rather unusual characters.
There’s The Eraser, who has a habit of making things disappear, and Mr. More, whose enthusiasm for adding extra things can create all sorts of complications. Meanwhile, The Shuffler enjoys mixing up the order of letters and sounds, while the extraterrestrial Outta Space causes trouble by removing the spaces that help separate words.
It’s a clever way of transforming familiar reading challenges into imaginative obstacles that young viewers can understand and help overcome. After all, a misplaced letter or missing space might not sound particularly threatening at first, but when those mistakes begin causing trouble throughout an entire comic book world, it’s time for the Super Readers to save the day!
And perhaps the most important member of the team isn’t one of the familiar animated heroes. It’s the child watching at home.
Through the series’ interactive storytelling, young audiences become Super YOU, an honorary member of the Super Readers whose participation helps move each adventure forward. By identifying letters, listening for sounds, reading words and making decisions alongside the characters, children are encouraged to become active participants rather than simply watching the story unfold.
That interactive approach has long been an important part of the franchise’s identity, and it’s something that remains central to the creative philosophy of Angela C. Santomero, one of the individuals responsible for bringing Super Why! to life.
As the creator of Super Why! and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and co-creator of Blue’s Clues, Santomero has spent much of her career exploring how children’s media can encourage meaningful learning through imagination and participation.
Her original inspiration for Super Why! came from a belief that learning to read should feel like discovering a superpower. Rather than viewing television and books as competing for children’s attention, the series was developed around the idea that thoughtfully designed educational entertainment could help children discover the excitement of reading while reinforcing important foundational skills.
And considering how much children’s media and technology have changed since the original series premiered, that philosophy feels especially relevant today.
Learning to read involves much more than recognizing letters or sounding out unfamiliar words. It also requires comprehension, curiosity and the ability to connect ideas, understand different perspectives and think critically about information. Those abilities become increasingly important as children grow older and begin navigating a world filled with information from countless different sources.
But before children can develop those more advanced skills, they first need opportunities to discover that reading is something they can enjoy.
And that’s where Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures hopes to make a difference.
The new series incorporates an evidence-based early literacy curriculum focused on letter-sound knowledge, phonological awareness, spelling, vocabulary and comprehension. Each adventure also features a catchy song designed to reinforce the reading concepts introduced throughout the episode, combining music, storytelling and interactive learning into an experience created specifically for young audiences.
The expanded half-hour format provides more opportunities to introduce reading strategies and develop stories around the educational concepts being explored. And with the addition of new villains, familiar heroes and a vibrant comic book setting, the series offers a fresh approach to helping children understand how reading skills can be used to solve problems.
Of course, the adventures won’t be limited to television.
The series’ multiplatform approach also includes four new games and three digital storybooks planned for PBS KIDS digital platforms, giving children additional opportunities to practice their reading skills through interactive activities.
It’s an extension of an educational approach that has already demonstrated its value across the franchise’s history.
Research into the original Super Why! found improvements in foundational literacy abilities among participating children, including alphabet knowledge and phonological awareness. The franchise has also expanded beyond television through educational games and reading camps designed to help children strengthen their skills through hands-on activities.
And the popularity of the newer comic book adventures has been encouraging as well.
Before the announcement of the full-length series, the Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures shorts had already generated more than 159 million streams across PBS KIDS video platforms and over 7.4 million YouTube views since their October 2023 debut, according to figures released by PBS KIDS in 2025.
Those numbers reflect an audience that continues to embrace the Super Readers and their distinctive approach to making literacy entertaining. Now, with a full series expanding the adventures of Reader Valley, there’s even more room for children to develop relationships with these characters while discovering the excitement of reading.
Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures was co-created by Angela C. Santomero, Sarah Wallendjack and Alex Breen, with Jill Cozza-Turner serving as developer and Sean Calligan directing the series. The production brings together creative talent whose work spans several familiar children’s programs, including Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Blue’s Clues, The Magic School Bus Rides Again and Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum.
But beyond the familiar creative talent and colorful superhero adventures is a message that has remained at the heart of Super Why! since its earliest days.
Every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of reading.
Not simply because it’s an important academic skill, but because reading can become a lifelong source of imagination, understanding and discovery. A favorite book might introduce a child to an entirely new interest, inspire them to create stories of their own or provide the confidence to explore something they previously thought was beyond their abilities.
And sometimes, all it takes is one story or one familiar character to help that connection begin.
It’s one of the reasons educational children’s programming can hold such an important place in the lives of young viewers. While children might initially tune in to help Super Why and his friends defeat a troublesome villain, the skills they’re practicing along the way can extend far beyond Reader Valley.
For families, the series also offers an opportunity to continue those adventures away from the television screen, whether through reading together, exploring books at the library or encouraging children to recognize familiar letters and words throughout their everyday lives.
Because the magic of reading doesn’t end when an episode is over. If anything, that’s where some of the most wonderful adventures can begin.
Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures brings 39 half-hour episodes of literacy-powered adventures to PBS KIDS, continuing the educational legacy of the original series with a new generation of Super Readers.
And whether children are helping Alpha Pig build, joining Wonder Red and Princess Presto on another adventure or using their own reading skills to outsmart The Shuffler, every episode offers another opportunity to discover just how powerful words can be.
After all, superheroes come in many different forms. Some wear capes, others carry extraordinary gadgets, and a few possess abilities that seem almost impossible. But there’s one superpower that every child has the potential to develop, and it doesn’t require a magical transformation or an extraordinary invention.
Sometimes, the greatest adventure begins by simply opening a book.
And with the Super Readers back for another chapter, a whole new generation of children is ready to discover the incredible power of reading!
