It’s time to swim at high speed back to Mertropia, with just a week left until the highly anticipated second season of the popular magical girl series Mermaid Magic. With the days quickly passing until we’re reunited with our favorite mermaid trio, Rainbow is building excitement around the forthcoming release with a string of newly released videos that we can’t wait to break down.
Following in the footsteps of their big sisters, Winx Club, this new season of mermaid tales is bringing us even more fresh musical tracks. While we’ve already seen the music video for one of the mermaids’ siren songs, it appears we’re also getting a new opening theme song, Antidote, alongside an all-new opening sequence.
Alongside the upbeat song, we see all-new scenes featuring our expanded ensemble cast, including not only Merlinda, Sasha, Nerissa, Tyler and Celia, but other key players in their story as well. Together, these moments showcase the combined “new normal” these teens now have. On land, there’s the fun of everyday teenage life, filled with school, friendship and adventure, while their mermaid lives bring magic, danger and underwater missions. And, of course, there are stage performances to fit into the mix as well. Make it to class, save the day and rock out seems to be the new daily routine ahead.
While this new opening leaves us with plenty of teases for the adventures and underwater missions awaiting our heroes, we don’t quite get the full picture of why Merlinda is riding horseback, trident in hand, charging toward a series of bells. At least, not from these brief flashes of what is to come. Thankfully, some additional context is provided in a sneak peek video released alongside the opening on the series’ official YouTube channel.
While we don’t yet know why this trial is taking place, we do get a good understanding of its importance as we see an arena filled with merpeople watching with bated breath, with Tyler and Celia notably among the crowd. It looks like they’ll also be part of the adventures in Mertropia this season.
In this clip, which runs just under three minutes, we see Merlinda racing across land and later underwater, completing a challenge on the back of a horse. Or is it a seahorse? Either way, she’s left to navigate various terrains and underwater environments while ringing the bells along her path. It may sound easy enough, but there are certainly challenges standing in her way.
And by the end, the trial seems to become less about skill alone and more about character and determination. Even without the full context of what this challenge means, it suggests that Merlinda may have to push beyond her own limits to achieve her goals this time around.
But the life of a mermaid isn’t all about magical powers. There has to be some downtime, and it appears that said downtime involves a skating outing (possibly a date?) with Tyler. In a short reel, we see the possible budding couple returning their roller skates, only to bump into a familiar-looking redhead and blonde who should be instantly recognizable to viewers.
While Merlinda clearly has no idea who Bloom and Stella are, it has finally happened. The worlds of Winx Club and Mermaid Magic have crossed paths! Though we only see a small, brief encounter, this cameo opens the door to the exciting possibility of the fairies and mermaids having their stories intertwine in the future.
What would a mermaid-fairy crossover look like? Well, that’s in Rainbow’s hands to decide.
But since it looks like Merlinda’s main conflict this season will involve her own internal struggles and the limitations she may be placing on herself, I think it’s safe to say that a trip to Alfea may have to be postponed. At least for now, that is.
With greater challenges, more magic, music and friendship, it looks like this new season of Mermaid Magic has plenty in store for its characters and viewers alike. And between the mysteries awaiting Merlinda, the challenges she’ll have to overcome and the exciting possibilities now opening up across Rainbow’s magical worlds, the wait for season two has become that much harder.
