Some characters have a rather remarkable ability to remain part of our lives, no matter how many years pass.
From the stories we grew up reading to the animated adventures that filled our childhood afternoons, there are certain familiar faces that continue finding their way into the hearts of new generations.
And sometimes, those characters happen to be little, blue and live in a magical village hidden deep within the forest.
That’s right, we’re talking about the Smurfs!
For nearly seven decades, these lovable little characters have been entertaining audiences with their humorous adventures, unforgettable personalities and the occasional rather unfortunate encounter with Gargamel.
And while the world around them has certainly changed since their earliest appearances, there’s one thing that has remained remarkably consistent.
Life in Smurf Village is never boring.
Thankfully, there’s plenty more smurfy fun on the horizon!
Peyo Productions has officially confirmed that Season 4 of the CG-animated “The Smurfs” series is now in production, with Nickelodeon and several European broadcasters returning for another collection of adventures beginning in late 2027.
And this time, there’s something particularly special about the timing.
Because the upcoming season will help lead the franchise into a major double anniversary in 2028, celebrating both the 70th anniversary of the Smurfs and the 100th birthday of their legendary creator, Peyo.
That’s quite the milestone for a collection of characters who have become such an important part of animation and comic book history.
And what better way to celebrate than with a whole new collection of adventures?
The upcoming fourth season will feature 52 eleven-minute episodes, with the first half scheduled to premiere during the fourth quarter of 2027 and the remaining episodes arriving in 2028.
Produced by Peyo Productions in collaboration with Ellipse Animation, the series will once again bring together its familiar international broadcasting partners, including RTBF and Ketnet in Belgium, KiKA in Germany, TF1 in France and Nickelodeon.
European audiences will begin receiving the new episodes in late 2027, while Nickelodeon will premiere the season in the United States before introducing it to additional international markets.
And while there’s still some time before the new adventures arrive, Peyo Productions has already offered fans an exciting first look at what’s ahead.
Season 4 will bring several familiar characters back into the spotlight, including Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Jokey and Storm, as the series continues exploring the wonderfully unpredictable world of the Smurfs.
And if you thought the little blue villagers had already experienced every possible adventure, it seems they still have plenty of surprises waiting for them.
From increasingly elaborate pranks to magical mishaps and unexpected challenges, the upcoming episodes promise to deliver more of the humor and heart that have made the franchise such an enduring favorite.
But there’s also a rather colorful new development waiting beyond the familiar surroundings of Smurf Village.
The Smurfies Village is preparing to become an important part of Season 4!
First introduced toward the end of the third season, this vibrant new location will receive greater attention in the upcoming episodes, expanding the animated world’s collection of settings and characters.
And unlike the more familiar surroundings of Smurf Village, the Smurfies Village embraces a colorful, flower-filled atmosphere that reflects the personalities of its residents.
Among the characters taking on recurring roles are Blossom, Storm and Willow, three spirited Smurf girls whose personalities are connected more closely to emotions and nature than to the specific occupations or defining traits traditionally associated with many of the Smurfs.
It’s an interesting creative direction, particularly for a franchise whose characters have often been recognized by their distinctive personalities and names.
After all, when you have characters like Brainy, Hefty, Jokey and Grouchy, it’s usually not too difficult to figure out what makes each of them tick.
But by expanding the world through characters such as Blossom, Storm and Willow, the creative team has an opportunity to explore different personalities, relationships and stories while remaining connected to the franchise’s familiar charm.
And with more than 100 Smurfs available to draw inspiration from, there’s certainly no shortage of storytelling possibilities.
Returning director William Renaud, who has helped guide the series since its 2021 debut, will once again work alongside head writers Peter Saisselin and Amy Serafin.
For the creative team, the upcoming season represents an opportunity to reconnect with the franchise’s original comic book roots while continuing to explore stories that resonate with today’s young audiences.
And that’s an important balance for a property with such a long history.
After all, the Smurfs have been around long enough to entertain multiple generations, from readers discovering Peyo’s original comics to families watching their animated adventures on television today.
While animation technology and storytelling styles have evolved tremendously over those decades, the personalities of the characters have remained an essential part of their appeal.
Papa Smurf is still the wise and caring leader trying to keep everyone together. Brainy is still more than willing to share his thoughts, whether anyone asks for them or not. And Jokey?
Well, let’s just say receiving a present from Jokey might not always be the best idea.
It’s those recognizable characteristics that continue making the Smurfs feel familiar, even as their adventures introduce new settings and challenges.
And rather than filling the upcoming season with an entirely new collection of characters, Peyo Productions is focusing on finding fresh stories for the Smurfs audiences already know and love.
It’s a creative decision that reflects the importance of the franchise’s established personalities, particularly as the series approaches such a significant anniversary.
Of course, there’s another reason why 2028 is shaping up to be an extraordinary year for the little blue villagers.
The year will mark 70 years since the Smurfs were first introduced in 1958, alongside the centenary of Peyo, the Belgian cartoonist whose imagination brought the characters to life.
What began as a comic book creation eventually grew into an international entertainment phenomenon, spanning animated television, feature films, publishing, toys, games and countless other experiences.
And through all those different interpretations, the Smurfs have managed to maintain a recognizable identity built around friendship, community, humor and the importance of working together.
Because despite their differences, the residents of Smurf Village have always been at their best when they support one another.
Even if that support occasionally comes with a little bickering, an unexpected prank or a magical disaster that Papa Smurf has to figure out how to fix.
With the second half of Season 4 arriving during the anniversary year, Peyo Productions is also preparing additional special content to celebrate the occasion, with further plans set to be presented at MIPCOM.
And considering the significance of the milestone, there’s certainly plenty of room for some exciting surprises.
For longtime fans, the celebrations will offer another opportunity to revisit characters who have been part of their lives for decades.
Meanwhile, younger viewers will have the chance to discover why these little blue adventurers have remained so popular for so long.
It’s a reminder that great children’s entertainment doesn’t necessarily need to reinvent itself completely to remain relevant.
Sometimes, the most important thing is understanding what made audiences fall in love with a story in the first place and finding imaginative new ways to celebrate those qualities.
And for the Smurfs, that means plenty of laughter, friendship, magical adventures and a village filled with characters who couldn’t be more different from one another.
Yet somehow, they always manage to make it work.
Season 4 of “The Smurfs” is scheduled to begin premiering in late 2027, with its second half arriving in 2028 as part of the franchise’s 70th anniversary celebrations and Peyo’s 100th birthday.
With 52 new episodes on the way, the return of familiar favorites and the expanded world of the Smurfies Village, there’s certainly plenty for families to look forward to.
And while seven decades might seem like an awfully long time, these little blue characters clearly aren’t ready to slow down.
After all, when you live in a magical forest filled with more than 100 Smurfs, there’s always another story waiting to be told.
So get ready, Smurf fans.
Because another smurfy adventure is just around the corner, and this celebration is going to be one for the history books!
