A New World of Magic Awaits! Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Unveils First Trailer

There are some fantasy worlds that have become such an important part of children’s literature that their stories continue to capture the imaginations of readers long after their original publication. Worlds filled with extraordinary creatures, powerful magic and adventures that invite us to look beyond what we know to discover something entirely unexpected. And for generations of readers, few literary worlds have remained quite as recognizable as the magical land of Narnia.

First introduced through the beloved works of author C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia has become a cornerstone of children’s fantasy literature, introducing audiences to a world where talking animals, mysterious enchantments and the ongoing struggle between good and evil come together in extraordinary adventures. Over the years, these stories have found their way beyond the pages of the books through various television and film adaptations, including Disney’s memorable theatrical films from the 2000s.

Now, with Netflix preparing to introduce audiences to a new interpretation of Lewis’ beloved fantasy universe, we’re finally getting our first look at the magical adventure that will begin it all.

The first trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, directed by Greta Gerwig, has officially arrived, offering a glimpse into the origins of Narnia itself. Rather than beginning with the familiar events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the upcoming adaptation explores an earlier chapter of the fictional world’s history, following two children whose unexpected encounter with magic leads them into extraordinary new worlds.

At the center of the story are Digory Kirke, portrayed by David McKenna, and Polly Plummer, played by Beatrice Campbell. Their adventure begins when Digory’s rather eccentric Uncle Andrew Ketterly, portrayed by Daniel Craig, introduces them to a mysterious collection of magical objects. What initially appears to be little more than a strange experiment soon becomes something far greater when the children discover that magic can transport them beyond their own world.

And as the trailer quickly establishes, not every world they encounter is necessarily a welcoming one.

Among the figures introduced is Jadis, portrayed by Emma Mackey, a powerful magical character who will become known as the White Witch. With an imposing appearance and an unmistakable interest in power, her arrival hints at the dangers awaiting the children as they venture deeper into the unknown. The trailer also offers glimpses of fantastical landscapes, a winged horse carrying the young adventurers through the skies and an imaginative interpretation of the many worlds existing beyond our own.

But perhaps the most intriguing moment comes with the introduction of Aslan, the iconic lion who has become one of the most recognizable figures associated with The Chronicles of Narnia. Voiced by Meryl Streep in the upcoming film, Aslan appears in a striking sequence that depicts his formation from cosmic dust, teasing the creation of the magical world that generations of readers have come to know.

It’s a particularly interesting direction for a new adaptation, especially as The Magician’s Nephew explores the beginnings of Narnia rather than simply revisiting its more familiar adventures. While the book was published after several other installments in Lewis’ series, its story takes place at the beginning of Narnia’s chronology, offering an opportunity to introduce audiences to the origins of the world and some of its most important figures.

For younger viewers discovering Narnia for the first time, the film could serve as an introduction to a fantasy universe filled with possibilities. Meanwhile, longtime readers will have the opportunity to revisit a familiar story through Gerwig’s interpretation, which appears to embrace a visually distinctive approach to the magical worlds and characters.

The film also features Carey Mulligan as Mabel Kirke, alongside Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma. Its creative team includes composers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who have developed an original score for the adaptation, with George Drakoulias serving as music supervisor.

And with the first trailer incorporating Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven, the upcoming film appears ready to blend its fantastical literary roots with an unexpected musical atmosphere, offering audiences a different perspective on a story that has remained beloved for decades.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 12, 2027, before making its streaming debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.

With its first trailer introducing magical rings, mysterious worlds, a powerful witch and the origins of Aslan, the upcoming film is beginning to reveal just how Greta Gerwig intends to bring this beloved literary universe to life for a new generation.

And for those who have always wondered how a world as extraordinary as Narnia first came to exist, it looks like we’re finally preparing to discover where the magic began.
