Tomorrow may always be a day away, but 2027 is shaping up to be a pretty special year for one of musical theater’s most famous redheads.
“Annie” is officially heading back to Broadway.
The beloved musical will return to the Great White Way in fall 2027, just in time to celebrate 50 years since Annie first stepped onto a Broadway stage. Tony Award-winning director Sam Pinkleton, whose recent work includes “Oh, Mary!” and “The Rocky Horror Show,” will lead the new production, with casting and additional members of the creative team still to be announced.
For a musical that has become such a staple of childhood, school theater and family entertainment, there is something wonderfully appropriate about celebrating half a century by taking Annie back home.
The original musical features music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and a book by Thomas Meehan. After premiering at the Goodspeed Opera House in 1976 and playing a pre-Broadway engagement at the Kennedy Center, “Annie” officially opened at Broadway’s Alvin Theatre—now the Neil Simon Theatre—on April 21, 1977. The production earned 11 Tony Award nominations and won seven, including Best Musical.
What followed went far beyond that original Broadway run.
“Annie” became one of those musicals that seemingly everyone encounters somewhere. Maybe it was through the stage show itself, a local or school production, or one of its numerous film adaptations. For many families, it was the 1982 movie starring Aileen Quinn as Annie alongside Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters.
No matter where someone first found her, Annie’s story—and especially its music—has proven remarkably difficult to leave behind. Songs including “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life” have long since escaped the boundaries of the musical and become pieces of popular culture in their own right.
That staying power is part of what makes a 50th anniversary Broadway return feel less like digging something out of the theater archives and more like welcoming back an old friend. The family of book writer Thomas Meehan noted that “Annie” continues to be performed around the world, from elementary school auditoriums and regional theaters to major international stages.
There is also plenty of enthusiasm coming from the person tasked with bringing Annie back to Broadway. Pinkleton described the musical as something deeply connected to what he loves about New York City and said he and his collaborators intend to approach the new production with affection for the show and the generations who have grown up with it.
And generations really is the word for it.
Fifty years means the children who first met Annie during the original Broadway production have had plenty of time to introduce the musical to children and grandchildren of their own. Meanwhile, countless young performers have stood on stages wearing that familiar red dress, dreamed of playing Annie or belted out “Tomorrow” long before they were old enough to understand just how much history came with the song.
Now another generation will get the chance to experience that optimism where it first became a Broadway phenomenon.
The families of Annie’s original creators have emphasized that same idea of carrying the show forward, with Charnin’s family pointing toward its enduring themes of hope, joy and optimism and Meehan’s family describing the return not simply as another revival, but as a homecoming.
Casting, a theater and additional details surrounding the 50th anniversary production will be announced at a later date. For now, we know that sometime in fall 2027, Annie will once again find herself under the lights of Broadway.
After 50 years, the sun is still coming out tomorrow.
This time, it is shining back on Broadway.
