Forgo the beach towels, beach balls and sunglasses, and embrace cozy sweaters, boots and scarves. At least, that is what we feel safe saying Stella from Winx Club would be doing. You know, after lamenting about the return of schoolwork.
Now that fall is starting, there is a lot to look forward to. Including the long-awaited sophomore season of Rainbow’s other popular magical-girl series, Mermaid Magic. After more than a year since their debut, the time to return to Mertropia is nearing.
But before the trio of mermaids can return to their ongoing magical mermaid tales, it looks like another kind of mission is ahead for them. This time with their famed seniors, the Winx.
This summer, fans of Winx Club got to see the fairies in a new music video with music star Zara Larsson. While there is no argument that Zara was the shining star of the video, it did lead with something highly notable: the appearance of Merlinda, Sasha and Nerissa. Meaning, for the first time, a non-Winx series under Rainbow’s helm was being presented alongside the fairies as part of the same world.
While that could have been written off as a theory or fun cameo, the connection now feels much more firmly established thanks to the recently released music video featuring both magical-girl groups united for one last summer send-off — “Mambochiwambo” style.
While the video does reuse existing animation from both the new and previous versions of Winx Club, as well as already released footage from Mermaid Magic, it does set the bar for what fans could expect if these worlds ever fully collide. And it’s now something we genuinely want to see happen.
Given how each series leans more serialized, perhaps there is an opportunity for a web-based crossover, or even a chance to leverage the comic side of both series. Time will tell.
But this is truly one of the most exciting ways to cap off the summer.
