Disney Princesses have undergone plenty of transformations over the years, but their newest look might just be one of their most adorable yet.
Mattel is bringing together the magic of Disney with the distinctive style of Japanese manga for an all-new collection of Disney Princess dolls.
And yes, they are every bit as cute as that sounds.
The new Disney Princess Manga collection takes some of Disney’s most beloved heroines and completely reimagines them with a manga-inspired aesthetic. Complete with oversized expressive eyes, detailed fashions and plenty of adorable accessories, these are definitely not your ordinary Disney Princess dolls.
Leading the collection are Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” Snow White from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and Jasmine from “Aladdin.”
Rather than simply giving the existing dolls new outfits, Mattel has gone all-in on the concept. Each princess stands approximately nine inches tall and features 11 points of articulation, brushable hair and a completely reimagined appearance designed around the collection’s manga inspiration.
Naturally, each princess also brings plenty of personality to her new look.
Ariel trades her traditional mermaid appearance for a fashion-forward two-piece outfit featuring an iridescent puff-sleeve top and shell-printed tail. Her accessories include an adorable shell purse and, because you really cannot have Ariel without her favorite fish tagging along, a Flounder charm.
Snow White gets an equally charming makeover with a sparkling bodice, puffed sleeves and an apple-print skirt finished with lace and ruffles. Her accessories continue the theme with an apple purse and tiny bluebird charm.
Jasmine’s new look features a sparkling top with sheer sleeves alongside genie-lamp-printed pants and a lace-trimmed peplum. She comes with six accessories, including a genie-lamp purse and an absolutely adorable baby Rajah charm.
Seriously, the tiny character charms might be enough to sell us on these alone.
It is an interesting new direction for the Disney Princess doll line, especially as manga, anime and Japanese-inspired character designs continue to become increasingly mainstream with younger audiences around the world.
More importantly, these dolls still feel unmistakably like the characters fans know and love. Mattel has taken familiar elements from each princess and her respective film and filtered them through an entirely different visual style rather than simply placing the characters in generic manga-inspired fashions.
The result is something that feels both familiar and completely new.
Listings for the Disney Princess Manga dolls have already started appearing online, though availability currently varies between characters.
For Disney collectors, manga fans or anyone who simply needs another ridiculously cute version of Ariel on their shelf, this might be one collection worth keeping an eye on.
What do you think of the Disney Princesses’ manga makeover? Which princess would you love to see join the collection next?
